Interview: R&B artist Journee talks inspiration behind ‘It’s Not You, It’s Me’ project

“I say things that women want to say but feel like they can’t,” Journee said in a recent interview with Remixd Magazine. “I’m very outspoken in my music, and I try to express my standards in men, so if they aren’t meeting those standards, I’m not afraid to let that be known.”

Journee is a Bay Area native from San Jose, currently residing in Los Angeles. She is known for her savage R&B sound that is sure to thrill and amaze her audience. Journee recently spoke with Remixd Magazine about what her latest project, It’s Not You, It’s Me, meant to her and what we can expect next from her upcoming music!

The songstress delivers an eclectic and flawless eight-track EP with her debut project, It’s Not You, It’s Me (Deluxe). The project is a sheer masterpiece, gliding from one track to another flawlessly. With stand-out tracks like “Options,” “Don’t Lie To Me,” and “This and That.” Journee’s debut EP delivers on so many levels, from her visuals to her melodies, making it an impressive first cohesive work.

Journee revealed in the interview that she has fulfilled one of her lifelong dreams signing a record deal. She’s currently signed to 1801 Records, which includes a roster of talents such as Coi Leray and many more — the label assisted with the making of her first EP, It’s Not You, It’s Me (Deluxe). The singer shows her raw and ethereal talent as she sticks her finger to the patriarchy and gender norms.

Journee’s, It’s Not You, It’s Me, was inspired by her past relations, which is why it is so intimate and authentic.

“This project means a lot to me because it was inspired by all of the relationships and situationships I’ve been in over the past few years,” she said. “I always felt like men my age didn’t know how to treat women, so a lot of the songs are about how I felt played or how I was heartbroken by their actions.”

Her sound is self-described as a “savage” type of R&B. From her track “Don’t Lie To Me,” Journee proves to be a “hopeless romantic,” but she wants audiences to know not to get it twisted because she’s still a “savage” at heart.

Her debut project has something for everybody. From the soft ballads to the pop hits with lots of rich sounds and heavy bass, Journee is sure to fit any mood.

As far as what’s next, Journee is setting up to release her debut her first album this summer with producer legend Hitmaka. Be sure to follow Journee Via Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok @journeeofficial, where she loves to interact with her fans and give updates on any upcoming music!

“If there’s anything I hope my fans would take away from my music, it would be that you don’t need a man (or a woman) to do you!” Journee continued. “I feel like society has brain washed women to believing that we serve men and that everything we do in life is for men. I want women who listen to my music to know that being independent is so sexy! I want my fans to feel empowered.”
