Los Angeles rapper YG’s “FDT,” song featuring the late, great Nipsey Hussle, gains recognition yet again, receiving 2.5 million streams on the day Joe Biden won the U.S. Presidential election, according to streaming reports from Nielsen Music/MRC Data U.S. The “FDT” song has seemingly become an anthem for the U.S. voting population and has seen a record number of streams and even more main-stream success four-years later — surging to an incredible 475% increase in streams in just one day from data reported by Nielsen Music. Following its 2016 release, “FDT” received publicized censorship by the U.S. government about the single’s strong rhetoric used towards the President of the United States. The song has had an influx in streams and downloads stemming from Election Day, Nov. 3, all the way till the day of election results on Nov. 7.
This week, the song finally reached number one on Itunes, which peaked at number 10 on the charts, and was even accidentally featured on a CNN segment. This ANTI-Trump anthem, which came out during his first year of presidency, has quickly become a good-bye hit as well. The song, while always popular, has garnered more attention and fame in the last week than ever before. Several news agencies, including CNN, The Root, and Los Angeles Times, have talked about and sighted the song as being a catalyst for young voters to be more active in the political process. Los Angeles Times, referencing the song as, “a primal scream, a shot back from the young, the Black, from those newly heartbroken and those bitterly re-affirmed about America in the wake of [President] Trump’s election.” Seemingly, making YG and Nipsey Hussle’s “FDT” the anthem of this political and historical moment.
