Interview: Roya1 talks new music, his upbringings, and more

For Roya1, music is more than just a career and a dream: it is what’s has given him direction. Since his upbringing in Northern Cali, it’s always been an essential part as he sought find his own direction. “[Music] kept me out of trouble a lot of the time growing up. It’s my therapy and my safe place ’til this day”. It was through his curiosity that he became driven to become better over time. Even today, his proudest moments lie in becoming a better engineer and producer, instead of sticking just being a recording artist.

The more he became obsessed with the sounds around him, the more determined he became to challenge himself to get better. “Competing with myself… that keeps me inspired, as well as finding new, good music”. His early exposure to genres like Neo-soul, rap, and jazz made him a sponge for new sounds. If anything, it’s the reason why his music holds so much versatility today. By the time he turned 15, Roya1 was already considering the thought of making music.

The Bay Area-bred songwriter is a rapper with various melodies and a knack for moody lyrics that sets him apart from others. Many of his songs feature a nocturnal essence that makes his tracks great for late nights. He’s preparing to give listeners his latest offering with his latest Nasty EP — out now. Tapping into his sensual side, Roya1 focused on making a project for the ladies in his fanbase. “This project is about embracing the sensual side of things, love, passion and pleasure.” One track he’s excited to release off the project is “Do I Have Permission”, an ode to his naturally flirtatious ways with women. With another project already in progress, definitely look for the rapper to make some waves this year.

Jayson pushed back during this discussion and let him know he had to make something for his city. The result was “All I Know,” which proved a satisfying result for both.

TiaCorine shares brand new single “Gas Station”

After blasting off out of Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 2021 with her lyrically immersive and captivatingly melodic single, “Lotto – Part 2” feat. DaBaby (17M+), TiaCorine has just shared her first single and video of 2022, “Gas Station”. Delivering sonic elements of Hip-Hop, Pop, Punk, and R&B wrapped in a visual aesthetic that’s as much inspired by anime and mall goth as it is by trap, TiaCorine has proven her ability to push the boundaries of contemporary rap with her versatile flow, commanding cadence, and vibrant personality. On her latest single, Tia delves deep into her bag of witty flows, coupling them with zany pop structures and humourous off-the-cuff one-liners. The music video for the new record is as imaginative and animated as Tia herself, who plays the lead role of Bully from the 2006 cult-classic Rockstar-developed video game of the same name. In the visual, Tia is seen extinguishing a plastic tip Black and Mild as she peddles off to school rocking a cotton candy-colored mullet, classic prep-school outfit, and black Air Force 1’s, only to end up at a local gas station where absolute chaos ensues. “Gas Station” is a distinctly bouncy and dynamic record offering fans a taste of what’s to come from the exceptionally creative mind of TiaCorine.

In 2018, TiaCorine exploded on the scene with her viral hit “Lotto”, a track that gave the world a glimpse into her wide-ranging musical influences like Nicki Minaj, Luther Vandross & Paramore. She followed up the massive momentum of this track with her critically-acclaimed EP, 34Corine with tracks including, “Mine”, “30”, & “Avril Lavigne” a punchy homage to the pop-punk icon of her teenage years. The EP garnered cosigns from a diverse array of artists like SZA, A$AP Rocky, and Rico Nasty. After seeing the success of the EP, Tia put together a deluxe edition of the project, The Sage of 34Corine, which featured superstar DaBaby on “Lotto – Part 2” and production from Bankroll Got It as well as her close-knit collaborator and friend Kenny Beats. Now, Tia’s focus is on putting together a full-length project and expanding her sound, experimenting with her wide-ranging artistic palette, and showing the world the true depths of her imagination.

Westside Boogie recruits Shelley FKA Dram for new single “AIGHT”

Today, Compton’s Westside Boogie returns with new single “AIGHT” featuring Shelley FKA DRAM via Shady Records/Interscope Records. The track ushers in a new era for the rapper as he gears up to release his sophomore album. With a minimal, West Coast beat the single offers the Cali legend breathing room to flex his muscle as one of rap’s sharpest lyricists. “AIGHT” is accompanied by a trippy visual that switches through scenes — humorous, surreal, serious — and blurs reality as Boogie introduces a possible alter ego. Watch it here. With its razor-sharp bars on the daily realities of life in Compton, “AIGHT” underlines why Boogie is held in such high regard in the rap game “Just lost a brodie in a dice game / Don’t worry ‘bout it shit is life mayne,” he raps over stark beats. “N***a don’t you leave that’s on God, give me time mayne / Got this little cheese and I’ma pick her for my side thang.” The redemptive track recalls the MC’s lowest moments and his paths to a new life via music. The “AIGHT” video opens on Boogie on the therapist’s couch, scrolling through Amazon Music’s Rap Rotation playlist and talking through his diverse emotions.

Before long, he lights up a blunt and is transported through the numerous circumstances he faces as a black man from Compton, a father and a rapper. The moments, as strange as they might get, speak to the various stressors and motivators in a young star’s life — including the sense that, if he could just get it all right, he could become something larger than life (in this case, a superhero named Super Blood). “AIGHT” is the first new track from Boogie since 2020’s “Outside,”which makes subtle homage to Eminem’s classic “The Way I Am” while unloading a barrage of jabs at foes, and declaring Boogie’s GOAT status alongside the Pro Era general, Joey Bada$$. Boogie always focuses on the approach, making each bar greater than the last one. After a year, he returns sharper than ever with “Aight” — beginning another chapter in an already storied career.
