Capitol Records severs ties with virtual AI rapper FN Meka after backlash

“We offer our deepest apologies to the Black community for our insensitivity in signing this project without asking enough questions about equity and the creative process behind it.” – Capitol Records

This has been quite an interesting week in the world of Hip-Hop news, and it just got even more interesting with the first virtual rapper FN Meka making headlines. Powered by artificial intelligence, the rapper has been causing a stir online after landing a recent deal with well known record label Capitol Records. According to a story published by XXL, the “robot rapper” FN Meka signed a deal with Capitol Records and dropped his first single, “Florida Water,” featuring Gunna and gaming streamer Clix. The rapper has accumulated a following of about 10 million+ on TikTok after gaining the title of “the world’s first A.R. artist to sign with a major label.”

A tweet that RemixdMag published, captioned “AI RAPPERS UP NEXT” sparked a discussion amongst the music community and brought attention to many problems with FN Meka. Many deemed the virtual rapper controversial after the “rapper’s” use of the N-word on his previous tracks including his 2019 track “Moonwalkin.” He also appeared to mock police brutality on his now-private Instagram page.

The character was launched in 2019 by Anthony Martini and Brandon Le of virtual record label Factory New. Creator, Anthony Martini created a musical vision for what’s to come in the future, “a human voice performs the vocals, but we are working towards the ability to have a computer come up with and perform its own words – and even collaborate with other computers as ‘co-writers.” The detailed vision did not pan out as expected when one of FN Meka songs resurfaced on the internet with the use of the N-word after his signing to the label.

After the announcement of a record deal on August 14, fans were outraged by Meka’s use of racial slurs within resurfaced music.

Just days after the announcement of Capitol Records signing FN Meka, activist group Industry Blackout released a statement calling for the label to cut ties with FN Meka and called for a formal apology. New York Times music reporter Joe Coscarelli broke the news via Twitter.

In response, Capitol Records released a statement letting the world know that they will no longer be working with virtual rapper FN Meka.

“CMG has severed ties with the FN Meka project, effective immediately,

“We offer our deepest condolences to the Black community for our insensitivity in signing this project without asking enough questions about the equity and the creative process behind it.

“We thank those who have reached out to us with constructive feedback in the past couple of days — your input was invaluable as we came to the decision to end our association with the project.”

“We feel it it is a great victory that Capitol Records terminated their contract with FN Meka however, the fact this happened to begin with shows how much work is still ahead of us,” the statement starts. “We’re glad the people amplified our voices to be heard so quickly on a Black issue, and that our action led to results. This should set a precedent that shows how Black and Brown voices can unify behind issues and get things done.”

What city are you from/ Where are you based now?

I’m from Corona, CA, but I moved around The Inland Empire my whole life, I was never really in one spot for that long, but as of now I live in Riverside, CA.

What is your artist name? What is your real name? How did you get your artist name?

Sky Hendrix is my artist name, as well as my real name. My mom named me it and I was always subconscious around my name. I use to go by MYHM, towards last year I realized I wanted to make the switch.

How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?

It’s hard to explain, I really hop on everything, I can go from some hella west coast stuff or some boom bap to pop. Most of my music has a pop/R&B influence to it though forsure, I be singing but I make it fly.

What’s one reason you are passionate about music and what inspires you?

Music was just one of those things I was born to do, I was a young kid dancing and singing to MTV when it was at its Music Prime, I really was just in my own world with it, and it just eventually became my reality.

Seeing things I’ve never seen before or just life  best influences me I realized, I kinda just let life happen around me and I let it influence my vibe when I’m making music.. I don’t like forcing it.

Who are some of your main musical influences?

I loved listening to Timbaland, Outkast, Pharrell, Pac, Em, 50 as a kid that forsure made a huge impact on me today, I’m always listening to some YE, Kendrick or Cole, or like some Tory Lanez a lot though, I love the way they structure they albums and I wanna do the same.

Tell us the name of the project you are currently promoting? What inspired this project?

I got a project on the way called, “SWITCH,” a 5 track EP, I haven’t dropped the title yet so I’m saying it first on REMIXD MAGAZINE.

I guess what inspired the name was SWITCHing my approach all around ya know? like I recorded every song on the project during a crazy time in my life, I ended up doing music full time, and switching my name… My life isn’t even the same any more from before this project was made… just a whole new person FR

Date that this project dropped or is set to drop?

I’m in the process of getting it mastered as of now and figuring out the perfect day for it but as of now late September forsure.

What is this project about in your own words?

This project is actually a project based on writer’s block… I was working on my “now next project” and I suddenly just lost inspiration early 2021.. Later 2021, I got out of my rut and the tape started just coming together naturally but, I had to take a step back and SWITCH my approach with music. I ended up really getting into depth with engineering the music with not just me but other people, which ended up helping me a whole lot in the long run. I made hella songs and I really just liked the 5, I  think they really explained, myself as the project was being made.

What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for? Include some dates if you have them.

Yea I got a whole lot coming, I got an album dropping January its music from 2020 & 2022 pretty much done, too. As of now, I’m working on singles, and possibly an R&B album as well once I get the right production on it.

Also like what I said earlier, I’ve been engineering as well, so I been working and recording other artist’s projects as well that are goin crazy right now too just tryna be that guy,  all around everything fire. Cant wait till even that comes out, I started making beats too so hopefully one day you’ll see some production from me.

What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from this project?

Truly I hope, y’all take this project into consideration, like if y’all goin through tough time and you wanna quit — don’t. Because your own doubts get the best of you and your own potential. You never know when you’re gonna see the light, if you really passionate about something you’ll make it happen.

Artist spotlight: Dorian introduces “Elevation” music video

Dorian

Dorian is an artist to be on the lookout for. The Sulphur, Louisiana-based up-and-comer is doing his due diligence in creating music with the hopes to do for others what music has done for him. “The main reason I’m passionate about music is because at times, music was really all I had to pull me out of whatever I was going through, or I was able to relate and be okay with whatever I was feeling at the time,” he says. “So I just wanna return the energy and be that for whoever needs it.”

Dorian released his single, along with the visuals, “Elevation”, in June of this year. The music video is a film by Frezh Editing. The direction, editing, and visual effects was done by Kenneth Williams, and the director of photography and colorist is done by Camryn Sinclair. The music video is out of this world, literally, as the visuals showcase Dorian in a spacesuit in outer space, planets and nebulas, and overall a futuristic vibe.

“What I want fans to take away from my music is to just know that it’s okay to not be okay sometimes,” Dorian tells RemixdMag. “Life is complex, emotions are complex, but it all starts from within. Never let anyone else’s opinion of you become your reality and be okay with thinking outside of the box. All of this is temporary, so have fun with this shit and be good to others. Be as weird as you wanna be and love yourself.”

Learn more about Dorian and his plans for upcoming releases below.

What city are you from/ Where are you based now?

I’m from Sulphur, Louisiana. I’m still based in Louisiana for the most part, but I mostly record in Houston. Music video was shot in Los Angeles, and did my very first show out there in June.

What is your artist name? What is your real name? How did you get your artist name?

My artist name is Dorian. My real name is Dorian Murray, so I really just kept it simple, me.

How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?

I’m still a fairly new artist and still finding my sound, so I can’t really describe it. I just try to keep things as versatile as possible, so I’m never put in a box.

What’s one reason you are passionate about music and what inspires you?

The main reason I’m passionate about music is because at times, music was really all I had to pull me out of whatever I was going through, or I was able to relate and be okay with whatever I was feeling at the time. So I just wanna return the energy and be that for whoever needs it.

Who are some of your main musical influences?

Some of my main musical influences, Andre 3000, not only for his artistry and him as a phenomenal rapper, but for him unapologetically being himself. Kanye, Drake, J. Cole, Childish Gambino and Kendrick Lamar.

Tell us the name of the project you are currently promoting? What inspired this project?

I’m currently promoting the music video for my debut single, “Elevation”. The inspiration behind this song was just me wanting to make something that was more upbeat than the other music I’m working on, I wanted to have a healthy balance and release a fun, confident song.

Date that this project dropped or is set to drop?

The music video was released June of this year and the single was released September of last year.

What is this project about in your own words?

The song is about feeling elevated. Above the noise, head in the clouds and not worried about anything beneath you. Knowing that you’re great and letting it be known that you’re fully aware of your capabilities.

What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for? Include some dates if you have them.

I’m currently working on my debut solo project(mixtape, album, whatever.). I plan to release one more single and video beforehand, but for the project, I’m aiming for a winter or early 2023 release, no rush though, I wanna make sure everything’s perfect. Title already picked and hinted at the end of the music video, but no set date as of now. Also trying to feature with more artists now to push myself even more and step more out of my comfort zone to capture a broader fanbase.

What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from this project?

What I want fans to take away from my music is to just know that it’s okay to not be okay sometimes. Life is complex, emotions are complex, but it all starts from within. Never let anyone else’s opinion of you become your reality and be okay with thinking outside of the box. All of this is temporary, so have fun with this shit and be good to others. Be as weird as you wanna be and love yourself.

Artist spotlight: Rising artist Saint Pierre talks new single “Anyway”

Saint Pierre

Saint Pierre is an artist who’s here to have the people bumping and jumping to his music. The Virginia Beach-based rapper originally got into music due to his love for the process of creating a song. Saint Pierre describes his sound as being multidimensional. “I honestly don’t have one sound,” he says. “I’m always working on becoming more versatile and changing my approach to every song that I record.”

He teamed up with producer 1hunnidshadez for his new track “Anyway” which released August 5th. Saint Pierre boasts of getting paid, yet remains humble in this head banger. “‘Anyway’ is just a song about me staying grounded and focused on everything that I’m currently working towards my day to day life. There’s situations and people in this world who want to knock you off your position but you’ve got to stay focused on the mission and improve yourself in the process.”

With more in store for the remainder of the year, audiences should be excited for what’s coming next.

Get to know the rising star below, and what he has in store coming up.

What city are you from/ Where are you based now?

I was born in Norfolk, VA but I’ve spent most of my life in Virginia Beach. I’m currently located in Virginia Beach now.

What is your artist name? What is your real name? How did you get your artist name?

My artist is name is Saint Pierre. Pierre is part of my government name but the Saint portion is a childhood nickname that I picked up over the years. I just thought it was only right to combine them together.

How would you describe your sound to readers who may not be familiar with you?

I honestly don’t have one sound. I’m always working on becoming more versatile and changing my approach to every song that I record. My goal is to infuse different genres into my music and trying my best to not be repetitive.

What’s one reason you are passionate about music and what inspires you?

I make music because I really love the entire process that goes into making a song. From creating the lyrics to finalizing the master, I just love going through the steps in creating something new and different. I always visualize a song in certain space or setting while recording it to make sure it makes sense. I’ll say to myself, “I can see people jumpin’ at a concert to this” or “I could see someone bumpin’ this on their way to a move”.  My biggest inspiration is that I’ve always felt like I could make music and be good at it. I’m an extremely competitive person so if I ever have an opportunity to get better at something then I’ll do it and put in the work. That’s why I always feel like I have no ceiling when it comes to getting better at making music.

Who are some of your main musical influences?

Ye, P (Pharrell), Lil Wayne, and Gucci (Gucci Mane).

Tell us the name of the project you are currently promoting? What inspired this project?

I’m currently promoting my new single “Anyway.” produced by 1hunnidshadez. Me and 1hunnid had always talked about working on a song together. We had randomly linked up one day and I had walked in on him making a beat. I had sat through the whole process and it probably only took him like 15 minutes to make it but by the end of it I already had a song in my mind that would be perfect for it. I recorded the entire song at his crib that day.

Date that this project dropped or is set to drop?

“Anyway.” was released on all streaming platforms on August 5th.

What is this project about in your own words?

“Anyway.” is just song about me staying grounded and focused on everything that I’m currently working towards in my day to day life. There’s situations and people in this world who want to knock you off your position but you’ve got to stay focused on the mission and improving yourself in the process.

What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for? Include some dates if you have them.

I’m currently in the process of working on two separate projects right now. I’m going to continue to release singles over the next couple of months to continue pushing forward with the momentum that I’m starting to gain. I don’t have any specific dates but my next release will be next month.

What message do you hope fans take away from your music and from this project?

I just ask everyone to come along with me on this ride. This is only the beginning of this journey and I appreciate all the support I’ve been getting recently. It truly means a lot. My biggest ask is to continue to share my music and my content on all platforms. I just want them to know that I’m going to keep on working at my craft and I’ll continue to get better as time progress.
