Interview: Highway talks debut mixtape, growing up in Seattle, and what’s next for him

Rising Seattle-based rapper Highway sat down with RemixdMag’s Tallie Spencer via Zoom shortly after the release of his self-titled major-label debut. During the interview, he discussed some of his musical inspirations in the Bay Area, expressing himself creatively, his creative process/finding his sound and more. The newly-signed Victor Victor emcee is continuing to curate his own sound, and is building an impressively growing fanbase in the meantime. However, during this interview it became apparent that Highway is much more than just a rapper. His skills as a producer, writer, and performer speak for themselves and position him as someone who’s confident and dedicated to his craft. Consistently releasing excellent music over the past year, Highway makes sure to capture his audience’s attention by being authentic and raw with every release.

No stranger to the game, he’s been producing and songwriting since he was 17 and says during his interview that he had been musically inclined pretty much his whole life. From his parents “putting him on” to certain artists, to growing up in a creative hub like Seattle, Highway always knew he was destined for music and ultimately found his confidence from behind a mic.

“My childhood was always creative … as a kid, I grew up in arts & crafts,” he told RemixdMag. “Seattle’s a big city for that, we have a lot of artists, not just recording artists. I feel like it was easy for someone from Seattle to be able to express themselves creativity.”

Highway also mentioned that he grew up listening to a lot of Bay Area acts such as E-40 and Mac Dre, but had a southern musical influence from his dad’s side of the family.

“My dad is from Georgia, so he played more trap music, like Jeezy, Gucci,” he says. “The crunk era was a big part of my life. Growing up, some of my favorite artists were mainstream, like Ludacris and Nelly.”

The rapper’s debut major-label mixtape ‘Highway’ showcases his talents in a way that paves him as someone in his own lane. It’s clear to see that he’s taken on his own sound and isn’t afraid to experiment with that. The cohesive body of work includes standouts such as “Next Weekend,” “Cash Talk (No Talkin),” and “Money Talk2.” Looking towards what’s next for him, Highway says he plans on releasing more music, and also detailed that one of his short term goals is “going viral on TikTok.”

He recently released a new single with an accompanying video to match, called “No Guitar.” It’s a catchy tune that further showcases Highway’s abilities and highlights his creative side with a visual that spans varying scenes.

Central Cee delivers on his LA Leakers debut

UK rap phenomenon Central Cee has done it again.

In an unconventional LA Leakers appearance, the 24 year old “Doja” lyricist from London arrived at Power 106’ famed show in a retro Brazil soccer jersey and an iced out “23” Cuban link chain.

Alongside its popular hosts DJ Sourmilk & Justin Credible, the fast-rising emcee didn’t hesitate in delivering a rapid fire freestyle that left the room in disarray.

Hopping on an original beat, the self-confident UK rap stalwart whose claim to fame was none other than a badge stamp by Six god Champagne Papi and multiple co-signs such as Wizkid in late 2020 before staking his claim on not only the UK rap scene, but globally including the U.S.

Prior, Cee has been known to be one of the most idyllic emcees courting witty punchlines, introspective storytelling and a clear tone when rapping to a variety of beats from Drill to Trap.

On this freestyle showing, the ruminant wordsmith began by accepting claims “he is the one to bridge the gap” between UK and U.S. rap before setting the bar high with his impressive performance.

Translating U.S. slang to UK for the audience, Cee made it look effortless as he straddled through different lingo and street tales, as well as shooting his shot at Rubi Rose in mind-blowing fashion.
