5 best moments from Rihanna’s halftime show

Although the Eagles and Chiefs’ football face-off was the main attraction last night at Super Bowl LVII, Rihanna was the true star of the show. Her performance at halftime was highly significant, considering it’s been five years since she stepped foot onstage. The Anti-singer-songwriter rocked an all-red ensemble while her backup dancers wore white. Throughout the performance, you can see her and her dancers maintaining their balance on ascending platforms.

At the end of her performance, Rih also seemingly announced that she’s pregnant with her second child. In just 13 minutes, the singer gave each record her all, ranging from “B*tch Better Have My Money,” “Rude Boy,” “Where Have You Been,” Only Girl (In The World), “We Found Love,” “Work,” “Pour It Up,” and “Diamonds.” to name a few. Outside of her solo offerings, Rihanna sung her collaborative verses for DJ Khaled‘s “Wild Thoughts,” Kanye Wests‘ “All The Lights,” and Jay-Z‘s “Run This Town.” Check out Rihanna’s set-list. While there were certainly a lot of astounding moments at her halftime show, RemixdMag has narrowed it down to 5 moments that really took viewers away.

1) When She Opened With “B*tch Better Have My Money.”

Earlier this week, jokes circulated about tuning out if Rihanna started her halftime performance with “Lift Me Up” due to its slower tempo. But Rih seemed to put these comments to rest after starting with “B*tch Better Have My Money.” The lit-up platforms were met with Rihanna’s powerhouse vocals, and her background dancer’s killer moves. Toward the end, you can also see the Savage x Fenty CEO doing the “brush your shoulders off” dance. It was a great opener that transitioned to other incredible mash-ups.

2) When She Performed “Rude Boy.”

Rihanna’s performance for “Rude Boy” opened up with a sonically pleasing rendition of the classic hit. For the EDM-styled remix, Rihanna’s dancers swayed away one by one with a hand gesture before they made a path for Rihanna. From there, the dances broke out into a belly roll before bouncing back up to lay down a few moves. Rihanna looked past her shoulder, and they all began to lay down some footwork. A whistle then signaled for the next move. Before the song closes, you can see Rihanna do the infamous crotch grab.

3) When She Performed “Work”

Shortly after “Rude Boy,” Rihanna kept the momentum high with “Work.” At the beginning of this record, her background singers can be seen doing belly dance that brings them to the ground. Afterward, they continue the choreography through a reverse plank that eventually transitions to a crawl. While she sings, Rihanna walks down the stairs as they follow her one by one. Eventually, they all come together to do their own share of dance moves, making it a standout performance.

4) When She Performed “All The Lights.”

Before symbolically plugging in Fenty Beauty by applying blush, her background dancers ran to her with open arms (literally). From there, Rihanna makes her way to a red box onstage while her dancers do their choreography on the sidelines. A moment later, you can see Rihanna and half of the backup dancers on the field while some are on platforms. Together, they do in-sync choreography that welcomes “Run This Town”‘s brooding production.

5) When She Performed “Diamonds”

For this performance, Rihanna’s vocals were supported by a symphony. As the platforms begin to rise, the spotlight is given to the singer who sings “Diamonds” in an acapella fashion. Her breathtaking performance is also met with a series of lights that allude to “we’re beautiful like diamonds in the sky.” As the song progresses, Rihanna elevates higher, and the camera eventually pans out to the audience, showing the mass of support she has as both an artist and entrepreneur.

Best R&B songs to add to your Valentine’s Day playlist

muni long valentine's day

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and the clock is ticking to get a present for your special someone before it’s too late. One of the most underrated yet romantic gifts you can get your significant other is a hand-picked Valentine’s Day R&B playlist. A mix of throwback and new day songs, here’s a few you can add to set the tone.

If you’re a procrastinator like me, nothing beats crafting a custom playlist for the lady/man in your life. However, sharing playlists works in your favor, because it’s very personal and can surely set the mood.

Check out the Valentine’s Day picks below:

If you’ve been BSing and don’t want to show up open-handed, allow RemixdMag to step in and assist you with your romantic endeavors!

You can read our selections of the best R&B songs to add to your Valentine’s Day-themed playlist below featuring Muni Long’s “Hrs & Hrs”, Sade’s “Cherish The Day”, and more:

1. Muni Long – “Hrs & Hrs

No one can deny that R&B singer/songwriter Muni Long doesn’t have star potential after the success of her smash single, “Hrs and Hrs”. I think her greatest strength is her songwriting ability. She’s able to have very intimate lyrics without being overly sexual, which is what R&B is about. Muni is able to get away with lyrics like “You sit me on the counter, instantly it’s thundershowers!” by using subtle innuendos.

2. Sade – “Cherish The Day

I had to take it back with this 90s classic. This track is perfect for Valentine’s Day, for how soothing and seductive it is. This therapeutic ballad absolutely deserves to be on your playlist.

3. Drake & 21 Savage – “Spin Bout U

By far, this song might be the best track off of Her Loss off the strength that it hits every single time. It’s just one of the most romantic songs I’ve heard in a while as they trade bars about the extreme measures they’ll go to make their lover happy. The hopeless romantic in me loves it when 21 says “American Express, you can have it all, Code to the safe, you can have it all.” Because I’d do the same.

4. Future ft Rihanna – “Loveeeeeee Song

Everyone knows that Future is the “king of toxicity”, but his music miraculously makes it seem not as bad. This song is for the toxic lovers out there. Everyone isn’t lucky this year to be in a healthy loving relationship. Future and Rihanna’s voices go so well together that you can feel the emotions between them blending their vocals together. And to sweeten the deal, Future drops off one of the most iconic lines ever with “I don’t want to give you the wrong impression, I just want to give you love and affection.

5. Michael Jackson – “Lady In My Life

This song embodies why MJ is one of the best to ever do it. It’s the best love song Michael has ever sung, thanks to its sensual lyrics and his beautiful harmonies. This masterpiece truly transcends space and time. If you don’t believe in love, this song has the power to change your mind.

New Music Friday: The best new songs that dropped this week

best new songs

A new week means there’s a new opportunity to discover new records. RemixdMag has curated the best new songs that dropped that you should be aware of. On our list, you’ll find songs highlighting progression, insincerity, and even loyalty. Similarly, these eight offerings provide the perfect soundscapes and lyrical context to show out both physically and verbally. With that being said, make sure your listening ear is unguarded. These songs don’t need much support blowing your speakers out.

Check out our list for the best new songs that dropped this week.

French Montana – “RATATAAAAA (feat. 2Rare)”

Jersey club seems to influence the hip-hop scene these days. More recently, Ice Spice used this style in “Actin A Smoochie,” while Lil Uzi Vert rode one of these beats for “I Just Wanna Rock.” Now, French Montana is taking a turn at it. Accompanied by French’s laid-back cadence, “RATATAAAAA” takes on the role of a party banger. From a lyrical standpoint, the “Project Baby” rapper reaffirms that he’s HIM. Elsewhere, he compliments a woman who has it all together. 2Rare follows the same concept, except he melodically delivers his pocket of rhymes. This new record comes on the heels of his collaborative EP with DJ Drama called Coke Boys 6

Lizzo – “Special (feat. SZA)”

Although she’s already dropped the song on her fourth studio album, the Record Of The Year Grammy winner enlisted her good friend, SZA, for a rendition. While it still obtains that same dark boom-bap meets R&B feel, SZA’s vocals give “Special” that extra pizzazz. In her verse, the singer-songwriter mirrors the original cut’s theme. Moreover, SZA unveils how she deals with negative comments, implying that she remains unfazed by the he say, she say. The SOS hitmaker also addresses those who tell her she’s overly emotional about these remarks. “You call it sensitive and I call it superpower/You just like empathy ’cause you think it gives you power/All I know is only God can judge me/I don’t hide my heart, I wear it on me,” she sings.

Smino – “Smi Myself & I (freestyle)”

The Luv 4 Rent hitmaker lyrically annihilates Beyonce‘s “Me, Myself & I” with complex one-liners and braggadocious bars that deserve the highest recognition. The themes in “Smi, Myself & I” center on his come-up, success, and how he rides for his community. The versatile musician also takes little time to silence the smack-talkers. As he keeps his foot on the gas in this two-minute record, Smi affirms why he’s in a whole different lane than his peers. From his smooth cadence to assertive wordplay, the St. Louis rapper’s new song exemplifies how he’s “‘nice with it and switches flows like h**s do when they bondin’.”

Fridayy – “Shoot (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)”

Following his breath-taking performance at the Grammy’s alongside DJ Khaled, Rick Ross, Jay-Z, John Legend, and Lil Wayne for their hit record “GOD DID,” Fridayy is back with several bangers of his own. On Wednesday, the Philadelphia artist dropped a deluxe version of his Lost In Melody EP. “Shoot (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)” seems to be a fan favorite thus far as it contains motivational wordplay and a 2000’s R&B aesthetic. On this record, both singers reflect on the non-believers who suddenly have an ounce of faith in them following their success. However, they refuse to be blinded by these individuals’ deceit and instead keep a sharp vision. The piano keys, dark base-line, and R&B elements solidify how they’re the roses that grew from the concrete. “Prayed I’d get some money, now I’m feelin’ blessed up,” they deliver mid-chorus. “Me and all my n***as workin’ like we stressed.”

FaZe Kaysan – “Black Ops (feat. Kyle Richh, Jenn Carter, TaTa, Dee Billz, C Blu, and Kenzo Balla)

The Drill scene all-stars team up to spit their most ruthless bars on “Black Ops.” Sampling Michael Myer’s theme song, this bass-heavy Kaysan cut is bound to get your blood pumping. Lyrically, they waste no time taunting their haters. Between all the not-so-light threats lies a promise to dead anything meant to deter them from getting a bag. Listening to “Black Ops,” you won’t help but to put respect on their name. The record is a tell-off to those boldly “talkin’ on 4’s.” Not to mention, it stays deeply rooted in the New York drill sound. “Black Ops” is currently doing numbers on YouTube Music. This one definitely deserves a spot on our best new songs list.

Kiddo K – “Pain Melodies”

Synergizing rock and hip-hop, Kiddo K‘s “Pain Melodies” commands listeners to heed the ultimate storyline. Kiddo K brands this single as a “ghetto melody.” He uses a melodic flow between the lines to speak about the street code, saying, “take care of the ones we love ’cause we selling drugs for better things.” Similarly, he highlights the dangers that come with this rich quick scheme. The record is the fifth off his debut EP, Diary of a Project Kid

DDG – “Delilah’s”

After getting the wrong kind of attention from a since-deleted Tweet about “all these girls being the same,” DDG snapped the focus back to his artistry with his new record, “Delilah’s.” The visual documents his time at Paris Fashion Week. Likewise, it’s a collaborative effort between the VALEDICTORIAN artist and WorldStarHipHop. On this video game-fashioned trap offering, DDG uses a slightly off-beat cadence to set the record straight about settling down. “Need my space/she was tryna move in soon as I hit her,” he spits in a savage nature. In the song, he also speaks about his lavish lifestyle, putting his opps in line, and seemingly taking on the role of Mr. Steal Your Girl

Fmb Dz – “The Show”

After announcing his new project will be arriving soon, Fmb Dz dropped “The Show.” The smooth R&B cut is accompanied by a visual that finds him chilling in his hometown. As his lyrics are welcomed by a warm guitar loop and steady bassline, the rapper speaks about his come-up, making his mark on society, and even offers a word of advice for dreamers worldwide.
