LA riser Ty Zee drops off genre-bending debut EP ‘Black Moon’

On her debut EP, fusion artist Ty Zee is giving, “eclectic”. The spectrum of her music is wide-ranging and has no bounds. Untethered, bewildered, free-spirited and fun, her Ty Zee’s first-ever musical offering, Black Moon is a peek into her experimental nature.

“Black Moon showcases my many, many talents! There are so many different flows and rhyme schemes in these songs. So much melody.  I do it all in this project. It is truly a work of art” she sounds of on her project.

Musical beginnings

Raised between Chicago and Marina Del Ray, CA – Ty first made her first song in her late Uncle’s home studio.

“As far as I can remember I have loved the arts! Every talent show, every play, every oratorical competition–I excelled in. The first time I recorded a song was when I was seven in my late Uncle’s home studio” she opens up. She continues that it was on a school science project that she stumbled on the experience. Later on in life, she would end up working as a law clerk at a firm in Orange County, LA, only to realize “I knew I didn’t want to be a lawyer then, so I quit!” Coupled with her producer Tim’s encouragement, she pursued her music dream.

Black Moon The EP

To open the new year with bursting energy, her EP Black Moon (short form for Black Moon Lilith) has arrived.

“Black Moon is an astrological term short for Black Moon Lilith which is the farthest point on the moon’s orbit from Earth. It’s short for Black Moon Lilith. I’m into astrology a little bit. Black Moon Lillith in astrology is giving natural, dark feminine; My debut EP, Black Moon, is giving all of that” she mentions.

Paired with her first-ever visuals, “Mt. Everest”, Ty Zee is visually and sonically an artist you want to keep your tabs on.

“My sound is futuristic;  it  is genre-bending while emphasizing lyricism and melody. My debut EP, Black Moon, has five totally different songs, genre-wise, ranging from hyper-pop to hip-hop  to indie soul! I write my own songs and I curated this EP to have a sense of continuity through its production and visuals.”

On “G2G”, she is honed into her self-worth. On “Fake Out”, she glides into a muffled vocal space introducing us to her succulent raps as she draws boundaries from fake people. The track is an intriguing bow to her eclectic style integrating indie-soul (the kind you can hear on a Roy Ayers cut), while trading off 90’s MPC beats and her lyrical prowess hovers on the record. Her p***y rap energy wades on “Just 4 Kicks”, while cuts like Mt. Everest freeze her in her poppy nature, much like the closer, “24”.
