Interview: DO Speaks gets candid about working with the late Nipsey Hussle

Spawning credits on Hip-Hop greats’ projects is something producer DO Speaks is accustomed to. The Kenyan-born producer, born Derrick Okoth, has his fingerprint on all of your favorite artists’ records.

From Meek Mill, 2 Chainz, Dave East, to Yo Gotti, and the great, Nipsey Hussle, DO has been a Hip-Hop stalwart through and through.

“It has been a blessing; all of the records came through building relationships in the industry and working with my team Track or Die (T.O.D.),” he tells Remixd Mag. “I met my brother Torrance Esmond (Street Symphony) in 2011 and he has been a great mentor to me throughout my career. There isn’t a secret formula, but networking is KEY, I would go to several industry events, conferences and meet a lot of people.”

His major breakthrough one would argue came on Lecrae’s Grammy-winning opus back in 2012. Gravity by Lecrae took the award in 2013 during the category’s second year of running and DO has been actively consistent since that time.

“Our team is always working on so many film and tv opportunities, through one of the publishing companies we work with provided us the job. Once again relationships are key and the way you navigate through this business the right way opens so many doors” he quips.

Having scored music for series such as Power Book 2: Ghost, seen “Hussle and Motivate” go double-platinum, bagged a second Grammy with Alphabet Rockers for Best Children’s Music Album at the 2023 GRAMMY’s, we catch up with enigma DO Speaks.

DO Speaks Interview

Where were you born? And where are you currently based?

I was born in Nairobi Kenya and currently based in Los Angeles, California.

How did you get into producing?

I started back in junior high around 13 years old. A friend of mine was an artist and wanted me to make music for him.

How did you coin your artist name?

I was in a production team called “ThaInnaCircle” and my partner Evrywhr would always say my music speaks to him. After that it was history.

Growing up what were some of your influences?

The Neptunes are my favorite producers of all time. I also love Ryan Leslie, Timbaland, Dr. Dre, Just Blaze and Kanye West.

How would you describe your sound?

My sound is so unpredictable, I use a variety of African elements in my production. I can do it all from R&B, Hip Hop, Jazz, Afrobeat, Pop, Electro. My drums are a staple in my production.

How would you describe your creative process?

It’s different every time, typically I go in with a free mind and go with the flow. If there’s something specific I need to work on or with a certain artists I can adjust. It’s all about having fun.

The album Victory Lap just clocked 5 years and it’s gone Double Platinum. How do you feel?

First and foremost, I feel so grateful and humbled by this blessing. Time is moving too fast, and the project is such an impactful work of art in music today. The fact that Victory Lap went Double Platinum certifies the legacy Nipsey laid out when we created the LP.

You co-produced “Hussle & Motivate”. How did you end up creating one of the soundtracks of the album?

I created the best back in 2014 with my production partner Street Symphony. We were at Atlantic Records studio working on various projects for the label. At the time we didn’t have a clue that Nipsey would love the record but fortunately Dallas Martin who is the EVP of A&R Atlantic Records played the record for him and he loved it. Victory Lap dropped in February of 2018 so it was quite process before we finalized everything.

What fond memories do you have making the album?

Every part of the process was very calculated and laid out perfectly. Just a collection of incredible musicians, writers, producers getting together and catching a vibe. We knew the direction would be authentic to Nipsey’s LA sound but we wanted each record to be big.

The record recently went double platinum certified by RIAA. How do you think Nip would have taken this milestone?

He would of loved it, I’m sure at this point we would of produced so many more records. However this one was special to him, it was the birth of his legacy.

Lastly, where do you rank Victory Lap in Nip’s catalog?

Definitely his best project to date for sure.

What are you currently working on?

Our team is working on a lot of film and tv projects for BET, VH1, and several movies as well. There’s a lot I can’t speak on but stay tuned and you’ll be surprised what’s on the way.

When you’re not producing music, what are some of your other interests?

I’m a huge Lakers fan and love hoops, also I enjoy fitness and ceramics as well. There’s a peaceful nature about it.

What are some of your aspirations at this point?

A big one is to build the sound in Kenya to compete on a global platform. Redefine its sound and elevate the amazing artists in the culture. Continue to get Grammy awards and more plaques of course.

Most anticipated upcoming tours this year: Drake & 21 Savage, Beyoncé, & more

It’s concert season one more time. Touring is always a great opportunity to see our favorite artists perform live. The live music industry has been alive and well with over 16 tours grossing over the $100 million mark despite a stark 37% increase in ticket price following the post-pandemic desolation. Touring alone from the Top 100 concerts accounted for US$6.28B in 2022, growing from 13% in 2019 (pre-pandemic) as per Pollster. Powerhouses such as Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, and company have playing a huge part in that being on the road throughout the year. With major artists embarking on hitting the road once more this year after long stints off the rails, Remixd Mag puts the lens on touring once more, with a short synopsis of who to see, why, where and when.

Beyoncé – RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR 2023

Queen Bey is back outside. To imagine her last tour was the enormous joint On The Run II Tour in 2018 with husband Jay-Z (the tour grossed US$253.5 million), the “Cozy” singer is going on her ninth world tour and sixth solo embargo with it billed as an all-stadium tour. Bey, who has come to be known as one of the most electric performers will go on a 47-stop tour as fans have been anticipating this moment since Bey last took to the stage. Her exclusive performance and residency during the opening of luxury Dubai hotel Atlantis the Royal earlier this year where she reportedly earned $24m (according to Fortune), gave fans a sneak peak into her show this time round. Identical with grandiose attires, mind-blowing pyro, cinematic appeal, thematic experiences, Bey’s shows are always one of the most thrilling and once-in-a-lifetime moments.

Drake & 21 Savage – It’s All A Blur Tour

For Canadian rap phenomenon Aubrey, the excitement is through the roof as his first tour since 2018 has been made official since his unexpected announcement on Monday. Much like with Aubrey, anything he touches is gold. Tapping Atlanta trap artist, 21 Savage for his first ever tour since the pandemic standstill, Drake will be supporting his 2022 albums Her Loss, a collaboration between himself and his co-headliner, Honestly, Never Mind, 2021’s Certified Lover Boy and his entire catalog. The last Aubrey tour was the record-breaking Aubrey & The Three Migos Tour that landed US$79m per Forbes. Drake is known to cater to a wider core of different fans from Hip-Hop, R&B, Afrobeats, and Grime lovers. 21 Savage will be on his second co-headliner outing after a successful arena campaign with J. Cole for the 2021-22 Off-Season tour.

SZA – SOS Tour

Endorsing headliner status for the first time in her career, SZA is filling up arenas belting out her smash hits. Since The Championship tour by TDE, SZA has developed the popstar gene effectively. A No.1 album for 10 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 surpassing Adele & Taylor Swift respectively who had the longest rein atop the charts with 9 weeks with 25 and 1989 respectively. Following this newfound sense of proliferation, SZA will be churning out Top 10 hits such as “I Hate U”, “Kiss Me More”, “Good Days” to deeper cuts in “Drew Barrymore”, “Broken Clocks” and more.

Future – One Big Party Tour

Straddling through North America for a big party, on his first headlining arena tour, Grammy-Award winner Future isn’t letting up. Tapping Mariah The Scientist, Don Toliver, G Herbo, Dess Dior, EST Gee, Lil Jarimy, and Doe Boy is further implication of Future’s ballooning status in the music business. As a co-headliner on The Summer Sixteen tour with Champagne Papi, Drake, Future helped Drake to one of the most successful tours by a rapper in history. Now, a couple Grammy’s in, 2 No. 1 Billboard hits, 10 Top 10 hits, 160 songs charted, Future is the shot-caller. For some rap cuts, and street-tinged odes, this is the tour you need to be at.

Multi-hyphenate and Canadian hit-maker Nav is part of the new generation rappers that broods bravado, yet still maintains an enigma that his fans devour. On road again, Nav teams up with SoFaygo and RealestK to join him as he promotes his Demons Protected By Angels LP. As a special guest Bryson Tiller will pop out on select dates. Knowing Nav’s association to rap collectives such as YSL, Cactus Jack, Free Bandz, expect some interesting developments such as superstar pop outs from his enthralling rap friends such as Lil Baby, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Durk, Baby Face Ray and more.

Wizkid

Capitalizing on his and Afrobeats notoriety in the US, “Essence” superstar Wizkid Ayo will take on much weightier tour in the States. Having played iconic venues such as The Wiltern, the RCA Records signee has notably toured the States on two previous occasions; in 2018 for his US breakout album Sounds From The Other Side that featured 13 states, and in 2021 with Made In Lagos which went on 19 stops. At this particular juncture, Wizkid will go on a 17-stop tour that will feature two consecutive nights in Miami, and he will play in a UK stadium with a capacity of over 60,000.
