Emerging R&B artist Syo shares new ‘Table Manners’ EP

Syo

R&B newcomer Syo (@im.syo) returns with the release of his new EP called ‘Table Manners.’ The 9-track project delivers on an array of storytelling, in addition to combining infectious sounds with harmonious melodies. As one of the freshest voices in R&B, Syo has a story to tell and he aims to ascend to greater heights with his newest release.

‘Table Manners’ is a multi-layered project mainly centered around the idea of comparison and wanting what others have based solely on perception. Throughout the project, Syo compares the idea to looking at someone else’s plate and comparing who has what. He uses the concept of food as a metaphor for many different struggles. ‘Table Manners’ is about reflection and learning to appreciate what’s on your plate.

‘Table Manners’ holds layers of significance for Syo, and it requires more than a few listens to fully digest the themes and hidden messages spread throughout the song.

“My passion in music comes from a childhood need to be heard,” Syo says. “My parents never listened to me as a kid. I would get whooped for expressing emotion or thoughts. I eventually began to write them letters to explain how I felt about everything. But those got thrown away. That left me with a constant need to be heard, to be understood. Music became natural, lyrics became vital.”

Throughout ‘Table Manners,’ Syo stamps his unique style of R&B on each track. Drawing influences ranging from Lauryn Hill and Kendrick Lamar, to Outkast, Sade, and Lil Wayne, Syo definitely has a range of possibilities that don’t allow him to be kept in a box.

EP highlights include “snack,” which is an intimate story of wanting more from the one you love, and “get you some,” which comes to terms with the theme of sacrifice. The project as a whole takes listeners through a rollercoaster of emotions … nonetheless, it’s some of Syo’s best music, and audiences are in for a treat. The sky’s the limit for this R&B crooner, as each release is more intimate and personal than the last.

Atlanta’s Destin Laurel shows what he’s made of on ‘Searching For Klarity’ EP

Destin Laurel

If you’re a fan of underground hip-hop, it’s only right that you know who Destin Laurel is. I still can’t wrap my mind around the fact that he’s 18, because his music sounds like he’s been around for a while. After listening to a couple of songs, it’ll make more sense why they call his type of music, “underground”.

An artist like Destin Laurel has a sound that hasn’t been undiscovered by the public, not yet at least. It’s not a sound that you typically find. To complicate things even further, his music doesn’t even fall under one genre. It’s a mixture of hip-hop, pop, and R&B. As crazy of a combination as it sounds, Destin makes it work on his debut project, Searching For Klarity.

This 8-track EP, which was self-produced by Destin himself, feels like an unforgettable adventure. I can’t help but compare Destin to the other rapper-producers that cemented themselves in hip-hop history like Kanye or Pharrell, but especially Kanye. Destin clearly went to the school of Kanye, in the sense that he knows how to flip samples and truly make them sound like something completely different.

Look at a track like “Condition”. Destin and a producer who goes by Zaka, put their heads together to create magic. It’s not rocket science or luck either, but the way they flipped that sample was well executed. It feels like they didn’t make the beat to match their lyrics, but instead, Destin’s uplifting verse matches perfectly to the dynamic production. What’s even crazier, is that as good as this song is, it’s not even one of the top three songs on this EP.

By far, the song that contained the most replay value and depth had to be “Arc’go”. In my opinion, this is the song that I think everyone will be talking about for years to come. It’s something about the vibrant production and the addictive melodic hook, “I’m on go”, that keeps bringing me back. The cherry on top of it all is his melodies because they are out of this world, no exaggeration. Just like the title implies, this track is about Destin being in “go mode” as he is making his way in this foreign place that we call “life.” This is certainly something that many young adults can relate to.

The future is bright for the young ATL rapper-producer, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds. Be sure to stream Searching For Klarity below.

New Music Friday: The best new songs that dropped this week

best new songs

This week, Remixd Magazine has compiled a list of new songs that’ll push you to speak your mind. From Rich Amiri’s “SALTY” to GloRilla’s “Ex’s (PHATNALL Remix) (with Lil Durk),” the theme at hand tells haters to pay the business that minds them. The added bonus? You can play these bangers while living your truth.

Read the selection below:

1) GloRilla – “Ex’s (PHATNALL Remix) (with Lil Durk)”

GloRilla deads the people who once made her feel alive in her Lil Durk-assisted record, “Ex’s (PHATNALL Remix).” Commanding attention through her throat-cutting lyrics and the menacing trap production, the CMG signee speaks about not caring for those who betrayed her. Her payback comes in the form of moolah and leveling up. Lil Durk matches the femcee’s energy, saying that the lies are built on a foundation of bitterness. Additionally, he taunts his opps with not-so-light threats, saying, “I’m the type of nigga spit on her casket at her repass/Might go mini Drac’, come from the closet, look like Wee Man (Go)/Trench bitches, they don’t care ’bout lashes they want ski masks/I just talked to Shiesty, I got some killers round ’em, ask him.” The new single comes off Anyways, Life’s Great…Bonus Edition.

2) Jermaine Dupri and Curren$y – “Never Enough”

Jermaine Dupri and Curren$y premiered their new record on the platform From The Block. The song is expected to be on their joint project, For Motivational Use Only Vol. 1, which will arrive sometime soon. On the two-minute R&B trap beat, Jermaine Dupri hops into his rapping bag. He talks about his childhood and what motivates him to go hard every day. “Daddy wasn’t home momma worked like a slave/That’s why I’m so focused when it come to getting paid,” he delivers. Curren$y speaks on his friends’ unfair jail sentence and having his way with a PYT. “I just re-did the floors for what they charged the boy I could’ve bought another foreign car,” he raps.

3) Love Moor – “Fantasies”

Love Moor’s “Fantasies” is about completely controlling the pace of an intimate relationship. Setting boundaries from the very start, Love Moor informs her suitor that she doesn’t intend to jump into bed with him. Sensuality only comes into play with a deep connection and trust. Over the jazzy afro-beat, she sets the record straight, “I don’t know much bout philosophy/But this my scripture/If you can’t love don’t come loving me.” The record is 1 out of 6 on her new project, LOVE

4) Rich Amiri – “SALTY”

Dropping some of his hardest bars over the video game-inspired Nick Mira, Thankyouwill, and Taz Taylor production, Rich Amiri rap sings about how dissers are “SALTY” over his prominence. As he retaliates the hate with a clip by his side, the Boston bred elaborates on his method of protection, saying “I’m in the ‘Ra with a Glockie, watchin’ my back ’cause they tryna knock me (Ooh, yeah)/And I’m out, ridin’ with a shawty, he finna eat you raw like salami.” The song comes off his newest project, EVOLUTION.

5) DZH – “Practice”

Flexing his lyrical strength over a speaker-knocking baseline and aggressive hip-hop beat, DZH flows with precision about honing into his artistry via “Practice.” The New Jersey rapper deads his competition with witty punchlines and wordplay that even goes over their head. Without missing a beat, he raps, “Double check the work ethic/You can see I ain’t average.” The new record is apart of tha Hulk series. “Green all year as I said before,” he wrote in the album art’s caption.

6) JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown – “Lean Beef Patty”

Coming off their collaborative LP, Scaring The Hoes Vol. 1, “Lean Beef Patty” is an idiosyncratic rap offering that samples Diddy‘s “I Need A Girl Part 2.” Layed with an electro-house influence, the record gives both rappers space for their freedom of speech. JPEGMAFIA calls out the opps (and even Elon Musk on occasion). He warns anyone who wants to catch a fade, rapping, “Watch your energy, watch what you tweet/You can go from Elon to Ye in a week, buddy (Buddy, buddy, buddy).” Danny Brown touches on the nightlife and how a woman has him hypnotized. The song was previewed last month on Brown’s podcast, The Danny Brown Show.

7) Pretty Pape$ – “WYA”

Pretty Pape$ is looking for some of his woman’s time after clocking out of his shift in “WYA.” Looking to get compensated with some tender loving, the Orange County rapper seeks to get a load off after working day in and out. The wobbly bass perfectly compliments the R&B trap production as Pretty Pape$’s suave flow influences his better half to stimulate his body and mind. He delivers, “I done spent my whole day getting paper for you/Where ya at? Girl, I had to check your location/I been waiting on that neck I got no patience.”

8) Three D. Swayze – “Mexican Sushi Roll”

Three D. Swayze says he’s not biting his tongue for anyone in “Mexican Sushi Roll.” Making a bold statement with a bass-heavy video game beat and seething auto-tune bars, the Florida native calls the bluff of those hating from the sidelines. He adds that if they have an issue, it can get settled quickly. Elsewhere, the wordsmith speaks about having little to no trust in anyone, “Niggas ain’t Judas/They’ll cross you like Jesus,” he spits.
