Four women in music currently making their impacts felt in their respective fields

To celebrate Women’s History Month, Remixd Mag would like to take a look at some women in music making an impact in their respective fields.

The music industry is traditionally male-dominated but women have been taking over the industry by storm with supreme work ethic.

We had the pleasure of speaking to some of the women leaving their impact across the music industry to find out their passions, current projects, and future plans.

Meet four women that are leaving their impact across the music industry.

Amanda Leopizzi

Currently working in marketing at Atlantic Records and works with a roster of artists helping get their music and vision heard. She also is a music creator on Tiktok and a verified Spotify playlist curator.

Leopizzi has been recently working on Portugal. The Man’s Chris Black Changed My Life and Sir Chloe’s I Am The Dog album campaigns. She works with a large roster of artists including Fred again.., Joe P, Arlie, and more.

She has a burning passion for working hands-on with artists and their teams and having the opportunity to collaborate with different people within the label to help share music with the world. On the content/playlist curation side, she enjoys talking about music, getting people on new music, and being creative. She shared “I also just love that music is my every day.”

When asked about her plans to make an impact she said “I am making sure my ideas and voice are not only heard but valued. I am grateful to work in a very collaborative and supportive environment. Also by sharing and creating online I am able to use that as an outlet to get my voice heard as a tastemaker in the industry.”

As far as future plans Leopizzi stated “I have a lot of exciting things coming with Portugal. The Man and Sir Chloe! Also making a few creative changes on the content creation side of things.”

Taylor Marie Contarino

Contarino is very active in the music industry and has many roles. She works at Universal Music Group in the 1824 department as a Strategic Partnerships Representative and has started to do some A&R work as well. In that role, she works directly with artists in ideating and facilitating unique events, partnerships, and opportunities, oftentimes directly connecting the fan with the artist in a fun and unique way. She also works at Live Nation’s Music Forward Foundation as a Program Facilitator where she coordinates and facilitates programming for people who are looking to enter the music business. Additionally, she works as a Tik Tok Creator at The Digilogue, and started her own non-profit called Women In The Music Industry (WITMI), is a music journalist that reports at events including concerts and music festivals, is a songwriter, artist manager, and an artist.

With many hats, her passion lies within being close to the music.

“I love helping empower, inspire, and engage youth and anyone looking to enter the music business, and I believe very strongly in community, support, and engagement.”

Recently, Contarino has been working with R&B artist Rosemarie who is signed under Interscope on a music video for her upcoming EP.

We asked Contarino how she plans to make her impact felt and she shared “I plan to make myself seen, heard, and known through my work ethic, my drive, my determination, and my impact. I believe that community is everything, which is why I pride myself on creating opportunities, spaces, and events in which women in the music industry can inspire and empower one another.  I hope to create a life for myself in which I do what I love, and show others that they, too, can create a life and career for themselves by doing what sets their souls on fire and brings them joy each and every day.”

Taylor is currently working on putting on an event for those who identify as women in music, that will be happening in South LA this April. She will be hosting the first-ever Women In The Music Industry (WITMI) Fest on April 15, 2023.

Kim Chanel

Chanel is very involved within the music industry working as an artist manager, marketing/sales for MNRK Music, and is an event organizer.

She currently manages Philly artist oT7 Quanny, and in the past has worked with Kamaiyah, Neek Bucks, Guapdad 4000, and more. She has worked on a full rollout for a single featuring EST Gee where she organized the logistics and the music video, got the song playlisted, and set up interviews.

Digitally, she works on Benny The Butcher‘s group BSP, digital campaigns, and DJ Drama for playlisting.

When asked about how she plans to make her impact she said “For the most part working with integrity and efficiency. Really striving to learn and get better, as well as help people along the way. I learned that people will always remember how you made them feel. So I want to be that person that is the change that they would like to see.”

For future plans, Chanel shared that she will be having more events on the way between New York and Atlanta. Along with being consistent with her artist management and trying to secure ideal label situations for them.

After earning her Bachelor of Journalism, Jess began her career in music media by starting her own music blog and contributing regular music features to VICE, Complex, CLASH, Sharp Magazine, Fashion Magazine, and more. Jess went on to work as a digital producer for MuchMusic and the Much Music Video Awards, before becoming the managing editor of cbcmusic.ca where she oversaw CBC Music’s cross-country editorial team and was the host of CBC Music’s The Intro — a music talk show dedicated to showcasing the brightest new stars in Canadian music.

Currently, Huddleston is the Canadian editorial lead for Spotify, which oversees music programming for the country. Jess and her team of talented music editors work together to curate all of the content and music offerings Canadian users experience on Spotify.

When asked about what she loves about her job she shared “I love that I’m tapped into music conversations every minute of every day — whether discussing what we’re excited about, how to bring visibility to an emerging artist, or how to support a new release from a global superstar. At Spotify, we’re listening to music constantly and finding new and exciting ways to put that in front of people. A deep love of sharing music with people is probably one of the main reasons most of us got into the business, so the day-to-day feels pretty special.”

We also asked Jess how she makes her impact felt as a woman in the industry and she stated “As a woman in this industry, I think the key is ensuring your voice is heard and that you have a seat at the table. I believe in sharing your two cents, asking for what you deserve, and actively facilitating opportunities that will bring forward movement — whether in your career, the business, or your organization at large. It’s also so important for women to champion other women in the workplace: hire them, mentor them, and give them their flowers. If you love something enough, your passion and tenacity will shine through. So, try not to lose sight of why you started doing what you’re doing in the first place. I still love music more than literally anything, therefore that drives everything I work towards.”

Greensboro artist Southside Miko drops latest EP ‘Littest on Earth’

Southside Miko

Greensboro artist Southside Miko (@southsidemiko) releases latest EP, ‘Littest On Earth’, which leaves listeners feeling energized and ready to move.

“It’s the first official release for me and I am very excited about it because I am extremely confident in these tracks and I am very pleased with the way they sound,” he said.

His sound can be described as hard-hitting and lively as each track emphasizes his message of being unapologetically you and following your heart.

Behind the release

The theme of the release came to the artist about two years through trying to figure out how to brand and market himself as an artist. “I thought repeatedly about phrases or a group of words that describe me and my performance style the most, which is how I came up with the phrase “Littest On Earth,” he said.

“Everywhere I perform, people tell me that I am the most lit performer that night. So after exploring various titles and phrases, “ Littest On Earth” seemed the most promising.”

Southside Miko explained that the release of the EP is about being confident in yourself, “and believing that you can do what you want to do no matter what things stand in your way. There are always going to be people on this journey of life who are gonna doubt you, hate on you, and not support what you wish to make your reality.”

The artist defined that one of his favorite moments through his time in music has been being able to produce with different members of 808 Mafia. “When I was first learning how to produce beats, I used to watch 808 Mafia cook-up videos for hours. Now, I’m literally working with some of these guys and it just feels unreal, to be honest. To hear that tag start playing on beats I am collaborating on is straight fire to me.”

What’s next from the artist

As far as what’s next for Southside Miko, he says he has some singles in the work as well as producing a collaborative tape with a bunch of artists from North Carolina.

“I plan on going live on Instagram more to add value to the music community because I feel like there’s a lot of people giving game but they’re only giving pieces of the game and not the full picture so I definitely wanna start going live more to help people who may need direction,” he explained. “The goal is to get a bunch of popping artists on my beats and drop a mixtape hosted by a big DJ in my area.”

The artist signed off with Remixd Magazine with a message for fans to just be themselves. “It doesn’t matter where you come from or who you are as long as you’re putting yourself out there and you believe in yourself, anything is possible.”

East Atlanta newcomer Gaten sets the tone with new song “Hummin”

Gaten

About Gaten

The ATL is recognized worldwide for producing game-changing rappers. If you’ve been paying close attention, it looks like Eastside Atlanta’s Gaten may soon be added to that distinguished list. An absolute monster on the mic and one of the hardest working artists doing it, he’s the latest heavy hitter rising from the streets, destined for greatness.

Since releasing “Hummin, the new single off his highly anticipated mixtape, The Glitch God, word of his skills and overall likeability has been the talk of his city — and that word is spreading fast well beyond the city limits. The song scored coveted forthcoming support from BET Jams, spins on influential radio stations, Hot 107.9 and Streetz 94.5. He was also selected as a featured performer at a number of high profile music showcases at SXSW in Austin TX this year.

Immensely proud of his roots, Gaten notes the struggle and strife he faced as a youth as the catalyst to becoming the artist he is today. He developed a hustle-at-all-costs mentality while turning to the music of rap pioneers like T.I., Gucci and Lil Wayne to help him move through it.

And like his heroes, his not-so-secret weapon is pouring his real life experiences directly into the music. Relatability for his fans is the name of the game.

Gaten recently told AllHipHop: “I came from the mud. I came from the bottom of having nothing. Damn near everything I’m rapping is real life, it’s nothing made up. Anybody can relate. If you don’t feel it, somebody around you can relate to it. That’s what I really want you to get from me rapping, it’s a whole story behind it. A whole meaning behind it. For sure you can relate to it.”

The new single “Hummin”

On the new single “Hummin,” Gaten emphasizes that hard work is the message.

“Everyday you wake up to new challenges, living in a country built to break you. ‘Hummin’ inspires you to get up everyday and strive to reach your goals! My goal everyday is to wake up and get me some BRAND NEW MONEY!”

With over 500 songs already recorded and in the chamber, Gaten’s hard work is paying off.

New Music Friday: The best new songs that dropped this week

best new songs

Remixd Magazine’s new list of best new songs applauds the ones who steadily go the extra mile. From HDBeenDope‘s “Free Mind (Freeverse)” to Diz‘s “Father Renaissance,” music enthusiasts are sure to find a bop that leads them straight to the finish line. Victoria Monet‘s “SMOKE,” on the other hand, helps others decompress in moments of high stress. No matter what phase you’re at with work, there’s a relatable record for it here.

Read our selections for this week below:

1) Victoria Monet – “SMOKE (feat. Lucky Daye)”

Lucky Daye joins vocal forces with Victoria Monet in her newest single, “SMOKE.” They collaborated on one of Daye’s older records called “Little More Time.” Following the 420 theme, both singers prep for a chill L ride. Similarly, they illustrate what it feels like to blow off some steam, all while being in the presence of someone they adore. A depiction of what it means to get lifted especially shines in this line, “Little fireworks that light up for me/In my fingertips I burn my worries/Do it somethin’ like that eight-track shorty/Keep it in rotation, it’s a celebration every time we smoke.” Production-wise, the elite songwriter follows her groovy R&B aesthetic. The song is a highlight off Victoria Monet’s upcoming album, Jaguar II.

2) 24kGoldn – “3 AM in Oakland Freestyle (feat. Karri)”

Taking a page from Drake’s late-night tone found in songs like “Chicago Freestyle,” 24kGoldn controls his own narrative with this brand-new freestyle. In just a minute and a half, the versatile musician takes a walk down memory lane and recalls “building a bridge that eventually got burned” with a woman who still has his heart. Although this special someone has moved on, 24kGoldn won’t stop going the distance for her love. The “Mood” hitmaker details unforgettable moments they should anticipate and intends to demonstrate why she fell for him to begin with. The somber chorus goes, “If I’m on your mind just say it.”

3) HDBeenDope – “Free Mind (Freeverse)”

HDBeenDope interpolates Tems’ “Free Mind” in his newest freestyle. In “Free Mind (Freeverse),” he reflects on how all the late nights and early mornings paid off. Despite having doubters in his ear, HDBeenDope trusted the process. Now, the hard work is very visible. But pure bliss, according to HDBeenDope, is also cutting off anyone who doesn’t want the best for you. “I remember when they told me I was ludicrous/Getting chicken, barely off the records, I was moving it.” The wordsmith also touches on his mile-a-minute hustle and enjoying the finer things in life.

4) FLO – “Fly Girl (feat. Missy Elliott)”

Rising R&B group FLO has dropped an empowering bop called “Fly Girl.” The song is influenced by the iconic rapper, Missy Elliott, who drops a slew of intricate rhymes. Lyrically, the group demonstrates what it means to have a high level of love for oneself. The singers also embody a high level of independence that won’t be lowered for any suitor. As the bouncy R&B beat plays in the back, references to Missy Elliott’s “Work It” can be heard. “‘Fly Girl’ is all about confidence, good vibes, and feeling your best,” FLO stated. “It’s a lively, feel-good song that still incorporates clever lyrics and fire vocals if we do say so ourselves. It’s quite literally a perfect fusion of old-school meets modern-day R&B, with a nod to and feature from the original fly girl Missy Elliott herself. We love it and are so happy to be putting out a song that can hopefully make whoever plays it feel confident and, most importantly, FLY.”

5) Hit-Boy and Nas – “The Tide”

Hit-Boy and Nas’s “The Tide” explores the price that comes with fame. Over a soulful boom-bap record, Hit-Boy sees others for who they are after their lack of support. While climbing to the top, he observes fake love and switched-up behavior. Yet, Hit-Boy remains unfazed through it all. Instead of wasting time, he channels his energy into perfecting his craft. After reminiscing on his come-up, he spits, “Thеy sleepin’ on me/That’s the main reason, I don’t sleep.” Nas, who is undeniably one of hip-hop’s veterans, exposes distant relatives and those who feel entitled to compensate from his hard work. The well-versed MC also takes a moment to reap the benefits of his success. The song comes off Hit-Boy’s new project Surf Or Drown.

6) Diz – “Father Renaissance”

At the pinnacle of success, there tend to be moments of discouragement. Luckily, Diz’s resonating bars in “Father Renaissance” illustrate the push-and-pull pattern we face when keeping hope alive. As he works meticulously around the clock, Diz wonders when his time will come. Along the way, the wordsmith battles it out with intrusive thoughts and doubt from the opposing parties. In the end, Diz’s tenacity brings the trophy home. He proclaims that he’s here to stay. Sonically, “Father Renaissance” is prompted by static and transitions to a chill boom-bap beat after. One notable line goes, “I’ve been moving with the wind I’m not lost, I’m not broken, I’m exhausted/Still standing on my feet, thought that shit would be my year, looks like it’s rinse it and repeat.”

7) Larry June, The Alchemist, and Big Sean – “Palisades CA”

“Palisades CA” is one of several hits on Larry June and The Alchemists’ upcoming collaborative album, The Great Escape. Vowing to always “bet on myself,” because “every time it’s a hit,” Larry June and Big Sean rap about what they’ve gained from keeping their nose to the grindstone. They also touch on the importance of self-care and love. As the duo block out negativity and focus on a more positive outcome from their hard work. The Alchemist-produced beat is both ominous and elusive, riding the waves of boom-bap. “I’m thinkin’ billions, cop anothеr buildin’, new woop Sicilian/Thinkin’ bigger, you thought I was coolin’, I was takin’ risks,” Larry June spits.

8) thee B.P. – “Strike A Pose II”

thee B.P. takes on the role of a person who frequently scrutinizes their physical appearance in “Strike A Pose.” Comprising a bouncy boom-bap meets jazz beat and cognizant wordplay, the rapper communicates that he’s a force to be reckoned with. His confidence results in knowing his worth and refusing to be a part of anything low vibrational. This record’s purpose is to humble egoistic individuals. The message shines through when he raps, “But someone go and tell the Pied Piper/Cuz I’m a beast, I’m a dog/I’m a motherfuckin problem/Woah Kemosabe, let’s see what’s in them pockets.”

9) Rucci & Bankroll Got It – Notorious

We couldn’t just pick one song so we’re spotlighting the whole EP. Rising in the West Coast with his raw lyricism and snarling flows, Inglewood’s Rucci is a master of sinister West Coast storytelling. Finding an ideal partner in Platinum-selling production duo Bankroll Got It, Rucci shares his new album Notorious, a cinematic and engaging slice of California rap. The new album is the first-ever full-length collaboration between Bankroll Got It–known for their hits with Latto, Lil Baby, Coi Leray, and more–and a single artist. Standout tracks include “Up 2 U” ft. Kalan.FrFr and “Shoulder Lock.”

10) Grace Weber – “Lonely

Grammy-winning R&B star Grace Weber circles back a week after the audio-only release of “Lonely” with an exciting new visual. The new VEVO visual showcases Grace’s full scope of creativity. The empowering video proves that even by herself, she is enough. She wants her fans to embrace everything about themselves. The Milwaukee-bred singer wants to turn the heat up for her forthcoming project this year. “Lonely” perfectly highlights Grace’s growth as a recording artist. The confidence in her voice is showcased throughout the 3-minute visual. Although Grace is alone in the DAK-directed video, she engages fans with silky-smooth transitions.
