03 Greedo drops first mixtape since 2018: ‘Halfway There’

03 Greedo

Fresh out of jail and ready to reclaim his coveted spot in the rap game, Los Angeles legend 03 Greedo shares Halfway There, his first project of all-newly recorded music since 2018.

Recorded in the months since his January release at Houston’s Sugar Hill Studios, Halfway There benefits from Greedy’s endless font of melodies and peerless ability to write fully-realized songs in a matter of minutes. Halfway There arrives alongside a documentary that takes a revealing look at what Greedy’s been up to since his release from prison in January.

Spanning 33 tracks, Halfway There provides an embarrassment of riches, a gift from a rapper who knows his loyal fanbase has been waiting a long time.  Greedy’s songwriting retains all of the hallmarks that made him one of the West Coast’s most beloved artists:  effortless taffy-like melodies, slick turns-of-phrase that become earworm hooks, expressively unfiltered lyrics, and the ability to flat-out spit when the situation calls.  The tape is home to recent single “Bacc Like I Never Left,” which 03 debuted at Billboard’s The Stage @ SXSW during his first solo live performance in nearly five years.

The follow-up to the Pitchfork-acclaimed Free 03 mixtape, Halfway There runs the gamut of styles, touching on Greedy’s every mood and his omnivorous musical appetite. Halfway There‘s origins in the Lone Star State have a major impact on the sound; Greedy has always combined his West Coast origins with his love of Southern trap, and that influence is felt through the contributions by trap architects like Lex Luger and Purps of 808 Mafia, and appearances by Southern rappers like Maxo Kream and Peewee Longway.

Still, they can take Greedy out of California, but they can’t take the California out of him–many of the tape’s highlights, including the breezy “Coi Leray Diamonds” ft. Ty Dolla $ign, party anthem “1 Drink 2 Many,” and the creeping and paranoid “Industry” (prod. by L.A.’s Cypress Moreno), reflect the California styles of his classic period. The latter provides a revealing glimpse at how the L.A. legend has processed the vast changes in the rap game since he went away: “Don’t post that picture wit me til I leave, don’t put me on your live/If my bro PNB ain’t go through that, my dawg still be alive/I lost him four months ‘fore I got released, couldn’t do a thing but cry/Cause after Bankroll, Drakeo, Dolph, and Nip, feel like the next to die.”

With additional guest appearances from Babyface RayRich The KidSkilla Baby, and more, plus production from the likes of Harry FraudSledgrenYung Lan, and 12HunnaHalfway There is available on all platforms via Alamo Records.

With Halfway There in the books and much more music on the way, 03 Greedo is making up for lost time. Forget a Purple Summer…it’s gonna be Purple all year long.

The ADONI to drop mesmerizing project, ‘Too Many Vices’

THE ADONI

THE ADONI infuses a soulful style into the glistening kaleidoscopic rush, TOO MANY VICES. Production reigns supreme throughout the journey and has a lush, plush kick. A skilled storyteller, he manages to let these verses cascade downwards, reflecting upon a life lived with too much chaos, looking for some semblance of sensibility. Funk, hip-hop, the blues, pop, and more enter the fray. He lets the melodies perfectly sync up with his narrative, which gives it that added intimacy. Best of all, there are hooks aplenty, so even at the rawest, most personal moments, a degree of softness enters the equation.

“Innocence (feat Johan Lenox)” sets the tone for the album – chilled-out and magnificent. Show-stopping “Spring or Sprung” takes a page out of Kendrick Lamar’s smooth, serene, and clear-eyed focus. On “Sofia Richie (feat. PRO-LIFIC & SPILLY CAVE),” a summery, sunburnt aura emerges. Handclaps give “ILYSM (feat. PELL)” that different communal quality. The silky bass on “Superficial Smile” feels luxurious.

“Vices Anonymous (Interlude)” messes with listener expectations, bringing up a Frank Ocean vibe. A yearning defines the tender as “Locked in (for the night).” Woozy chords and a nice, hard-hitting drum kick give “Reachin’” a giddiness. Percussive elements bounce off the walls on the commanding “Psycho.” Parts of “Off Guard (feat $LEAZE EZ)” have the desire to rise all the way up into the sky. Gentle vocalists play off each other on exploring “Find My Way (feat. SAMWYSE & AYOTEMI).” “DROPTOP” has a toybox melody that feels nostalgic. Elegantly bringing it all home is the fantastic sweeping finale of “Walkaway.”

With the powerful message of “TOO MANY VICES,” THE ADONI shows off an impressive knowledge of many musical styles, refusing to settle on just one.

Make sure to tune into Too Many Vices on April 6th, 2023.

From the sunny skies, to the palm trees, to roaming the streets of Fairfax, Kase Cobain did a great job at highlighting the town that houses so many talented artists and creatives.

Skip Waiters invites us over in “Mother’s Basement”

Skip Waiters

Skip Waiters (@skipwaiters) is giving a new meaning to conscious music. The rising Brampton-based artist’s latest single, “Mother’s Basement”, gives us insight into his thoughts of transitioning from living in his mother’s home, then moving out. “This project is about exploration, healing, problems and finding solutions. It’s purely centered around soul searching.” he shares with Remixd Mag.

Quite similar to Tyler, the Creator, and Anderson .Paak, Skip Waiters offers a unique and creative style to storytelling. This artist’s pen game is to be respected as has a way of painting vivid pictures with just his lyrics. His lyrics are delivered in such a chill, yet enthralling way, you can’t help but to listen with open ears. His sound can be described as alternative Hip-Hop & R&B as he likes to control the narrative on what traditional genres sound like.

The accompanying visual to the single is just as captivating. We’re taken on a journey through Skip Waiters’ introspection throughout the video. We find him throughout different rooms of a colorful and vintage, yet empty house as he performs his song as three different versions of himself. The music video and song together just feels like a personal invitation into Skip’s mind.

“Mother’s Basement” is off Skip Waiter’s Stream of Consciousness album, which released on his birthday. “The inspiration behind the project was therapy. It’s about me trying to find myself as an artist, but most importantly as a human being. Writing a lot of these introspective songs made me realize I don’t have everything figured out. This album was my way to figure out why.”

With that said, Skip Waiters is definitely an artist that is worth exploring. He’s one that is relatable, will have you thinking, and grooving to his music at the same time. Make sure to check out “Mother’s Basement”, and Stream of Consciousness below, and follow him @skipwaiters on all platforms!
