Ginuwine falls off stage: Here’s what you missed at Lovers and Friends Festival

Ginuwine

This year’s Lovers and Friends Fest was filled with so many moments. From good, to bad, to awkward. This year’s festival had a lot going on in just that one day.

Remixd Mag has got you covered with what you missed at the Lovers and Friends Festival.

Ginuwine falling off the stage

Ginuwine just doesn’t cease to disappoint when it comes to being the talk on the internet. From his funny and viral past moments on stage, The R&B artist continues the momentum at this year’s festival.

While performing his hit single, “In Those Jeans”, the singer jumped off the stage, however he didn’t quite land the way he intended. While on his way down, he’s seen trying to grab on to his ASL interpreter to avoid falling off, however, that didn’t work.

But that didn’t seem to stop him! He continued to sing his heart out from down where he was. The following Monday (May 8th). Ginuwine took to his Instagram to address his fall with some humor. He even sings Donnie McClurkin’s “We Fall Down” in light of the joke.

Da Brat performing pregnant

Speculations swirled on how Da Brat would perform while pregnant. However the rapper left no crumbs during her flawless performance.

The rapper sported a custom white and red Bulls jersey as she proudly displayed her pregnant belly.

Bryson Tiller brings out Mario

Bryson Tiller had a very intimate set at the Bling stage. He performed hits from his popular 2015 debut album, TRAPSOUL. Though he had the crowd singing along with him, the artist he brought had the crowd singing at the top of their lungs.

Singer Mario would join Tiller on stage, and gave us a mini show of his own. He performed “Crying Out for Me”, “Let Me Love You”, and his 2002 debut single, “Just a Friend”.

Mario was the perfect surprise for the R&B lovers.

Christina Aguilera brings out Lil Kim to perform “Lady Marmalade”

Christina Aguilera gave the crowd a show with her powerful voice. She performed a few of her hits, however the highlight of her set was when she brought out Lil Kim to perform their 2001 hit single, “Lady Marmalade”

Lil Kim also had a set at the festival earlier in the day. However seeing her come out to perform the iconic song was surely a moment.

Return of PartyNextDoor

PartyNextDoor is one lowkey artist. Much like Frank Ocean, this artist comes out every so often to give his fans a show. So you gotta catch this artist when you can.

It was, however, a pleasure to see him arrive on stage performing “Break From Toronto”. His set was intimate and was filled with so many of his personal hits from “Right Now”, “Persian Rugs”, and “With You” ft Drake off of the 2016 Views album.

Honorable mention: All that walking

Not music related, however for those who were in attendance at this year’s festival, you know that there was a lot of walking to try to get to each stage on time to see an artist perform.

The festival did a great job by having the “Lovers” and “Friends” stage right next to each other for the headliners. However, walking from the “Lovers” and “Friends” stage over to the “Bling” or “Crunk” stage was a mission in itself.

If you weren’t at the festival, be thankful you missed out on that.

Top 5 highlight moments at Lovers and Friends Fest

Usher

Usher’s Lovers and Friends festival brought the heat back to Las Vegas for their second annual festival on May 7th. The lineup was full of over 45 Hip-Hop and R&B artists from the 90s/early 2000s. Artists on the lineup also included today’s Hip-Hop and R&B artists.

The jam-packed, star-studded lineup alone is the moment. However, there were some outstanding highlights from the show, and Remixd Mag was there to capture it all.

Mariah Carey reunites with Boyz II Men on stage

The iconic, Mariah Carey, blew Vegas out with her powerful and soulful vocals. Appearing in a black fitting dress with gold fringes, Mariah looked ready to own the stage, and that she did.

Carey was radiating on stage as she sang hits like”Heartbreaker”, “Obsessed”, and “We Belong Together”. However, the highlight of her performance was when she delivered an impromptu performance to introduce Boyz II Men.

The legendary artists performed their 1995 hit single, “One Sweet Day”. The song has broken records since its release with spending 16 weeks on the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. The song was the longest running number one for 23 years.

Usher Delivers Epic Performance

The performer, who hosted this years festival, gave the crowd nothing less than an epic performance! Usher has been doing his thing for his My Way Las Vegas residency since 2021, and he brought the same energy to the festival stage.

Dressed in all leather, Usher took us on a fun and reminiscent journey through his expansive catalog from “My Way”, to “Confessions”, and “Love in this Club”.

The highlight of his performance was when Usher brought out today’s R&B songstress, Muni Long for an unreleased rendition of “Hrs & Hrs”. He also brought out Summer Walker right before her scheduled set, and their chemistry was enticing.

Chris Brown lights up the stage

Chris Brown, despite the allegations over the weekend, gave an outstanding performance. Known for his stage presence and performances, Chris did a great job mesmerizing the crowd.

Like many of the other sets, people gathered around as fast and as close as they could to the stage. However, at Chris’ set, you felt how anxious the crowd felt to get a good glimpse at the “Loyal” artist.

He opened up his set with “Under The Influence”, and the crowd went insane. Chris kept his his energy up throughout his whole set! The highlight of Chris’ set (and what makes him special as an artist) is that he is one of the few artists that has a discography of nostalgic throwback hits along with current hits. Chris journeyed us through his catalog from when he was young and fresh in 2005 with “Poppin”, to his more grown and mature music like, “Back to Sleep”. He also performed his 2007 hit, “With You” which felt like the ultimate nostalgic feel-good song.

As he shouted a “Free Thug”, Chris closed out his set with “Go Crazy” off from his and Young Thug’s 2019 joint album, Slime & B.

Jhene Brings Out Big Sean and Saweetie

The angelic LA-native and songstress had the crowd swaying and singing their hearts out at the Friends stage. She opened up her set with “Stay Ready” from her 2013 debut EP Sail Out. Throughout her performance, Jhene Aiko serenaded the crowd with hits like “The Worst”, “Sativa”, and “From Time” ft. Drake off of his 2013 Nothing Was The Same album. Aiko has a special way of creating an intimate and peaceful atmosphere with her enchanting vocals and captivating stage presence. She even handed out flowers to some of her fans in the audience.

The highlight from Jhene Aiko’s performance was when she brought out the pretty girl herself, Saweetie, to perform their collaborated single, “Back To The Streets”. She also performed “My Type”.

Shortly after, Aiko brought out boyfriend and rapper, Big Sean, to perform their collaborated single, “I Know”. The Detroit rapper then took a moment to give his girlfriend, and mother of their son, her flowers. He shared how Jhene has been so nurturing and hands-on with their son, Noah. Sean shares to the crowd, “It took a lot for her to get up on stage today, so I appreciate all of the love you guys have shown. And shoutout to all the mommas out there doing their thing too.” he tells Jhene he loves her, and gives her love tap to her behind before exiting the stage.

Lovers and Friends was Jhene’s first performance on a stage since giving birth to her and Big Sean’s son back in November 2022.

Missy Elliot closes the show

Missy Elliot was definitely one of the most anticipated sets at the festival, and the legendary artist did not disappoint. She was the highlight of the festival overall. She closed out the festival performing some of her greatest hits such as “Gossip Folks”, “Work It”, and “Hot Boyz”. She also previewed an upcoming single, “The Greatest”, which is fitting for the recently inducted Hall of Famer.

Missy Elliot’s set was unlike any other of the other sets. Missy is true to her eccentric and futuristic style as her set resembled outer space. The stage visuals were full of kaleidoscopes and alien abduction backdrops.

The fans who stuck around til the end really had a time as Missy Elliot had everyone in the crowd dancing as she performed her party pleasers like “Get Ur Freak On”, “Let It Go”, and “Pass That Dutch”. She turned the crowd up another notch with a surprise appearance from Monica to perform “So Gone”, which Elliot produced. She closed out her set with “Lose Control” before getting “abducted” by aliens.

Why Lovers and Friends is the perfect festival for millennials

Lovers and Friends

Remember where you were when you first heard Nelly’s, “Hot in Herre” in 2002? Or who you pretended your boo was in your head when you sang your heart out to Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” in 2005? Some of us were too young to be singing a lot of the songs from that era. And we definitely were too young to be in the parties or clubs like we saw in the music videos. Yet, they managed to feel so good to sing and dance along to.

Over time, we eventually got old enough to experience the party life, love, and heartbreak. And throughout time, Hip-Hop and R&B evolved along with us. By the time we made it to adulthood between 2010-2015 (depending on where one falls in the millennial year), we had the likes of Drake, Future, and SZA be the voice for our generation. Even so, no other song got the message across better than The Diplomats’, “Hey Ma”, Jagged Edge’s “Let’s Get Married”, or Soulja Boy’s “Kiss Me Through The Phone”. Furthermore, no one has been able to do it like Usher, Jon, or Luda with, “Lovers and Friends”. And although we were too young to truly understand the depth of those songs at the time, those records have carried out throughout our childhood into adulthood. In no time, however, we’ve been given the opportunity to properly enjoy these songs in one setting at our “big ol age”. Finally, we can experience the nostalgia through the Lovers and Friends Festival.

Lovers and Friends is a festival dedicated to the millennials. Dedicated strictly to the fans of the 90s/early 2000s (the aughts) Hip-Hop and R&B era. Curated by Usher, who is arguable the king of R&B, Lovers and Friends is a festival jam packed with a lineup of artists. These artists have created timeless Hip-Hop & R&B music over their careers. The festival gave fans the opportunity to unlock and relive those feel-good moments from our childhood. Memories of recording our favorite song on our phones for a ringtone; battle-dancing at the school dance; and choosing the perfect MySpace profile song (mine was Fantasia’s, “When I See You”). Lovers and Friends was definitely the place to be for millennials who needed that feeling of nostalgia. And this millennial was there to catch all the vibes for Remixd Mag.

The artists hit the stage to perform some of their biggest throwback hits on the stage, and as a millennial, this was a special gift. Lovers and Friends provided a platform for millennials to get to stompin’ in our air force ones with Nelly; crank dat Soulja Boy with the first rapper to ever crank dat; Harlem shake with Bow Wow; and lose control with Missy Elliot. Everyone in the crowd seemed to be overjoyed with each throwback hit, and it was overall a great time for millennials to get together and share that feeling of nostalgia.

Artists like Mariah Carey, Missy Elliot, 50 Cent, Ginuwine, Jagged Edge, Soulja Boy, Yung Joc, and many others not only dominated the 90s and early 2000s Hip-Hop and R&B era, but their music still holds a special place in our hearts and music library to this day. With their soulful love ballads, or hype and catchy dances, these artists really had the music game on lock. This festival, however, further proved that they always will too.

Although the festival was filled with popular 90s/early 2000s Hip-Hop and R&B artists, the festival also included the new-age artists who have revived and are keeping the authentic sound of the genre alive. The Hip-Hop and R&B genre has definitely evolved over the years, but artists like Jhene Aiko, Summer Walker, Bryson Tiller, Miguel, and PartyNextDoor continue to keep the original soul of the genre alive, but in their own unique way.

For those who had the privilege of attending the Lovers and Friends Festival, I think we can all agree that the experience satisfied the nostalgic feels.
