Newby blends pop and rap with quirky rhymes and infectious energy

Newby

Rising artist Newby (@n3w6y) is paving his own lane in the music industry with his unique blend of pop and rap. With infectious energy, quirky rhymes, and a captivating style, Newby has carved out a distinct sound that sets him apart from the crowd. His focus song “Care 4 U” showcases his talent and creative approach to music.

“My musical journey has honestly been so rocky, so many ups and downs, and it’s just not what I would’ve imagined I’d be doing when I was younger,” shares Newby, reflecting on his unconventional path. “When I was old enough to realize that I would be able to put my own productions together, I started writing scripts and gathering people to start putting my productions together. After so many letdowns, though, I eventually decided it would be easier for me to go to the studio, write my own music, and have my own videos, so I don’t have to rely on so many actors and extras to get the perfect shot.”

Describing his unique sound and style, Newby explains, “Honestly, I just tell people that it’s kind of like a mix between pop and rap, so I just say pop rap, and I just say I’m super Kawaii on top of that.” He adds, “Sometimes telling people that I make rap automatically makes them think it’s maybe gangster associated or in that style, and it’s kind of hard because people already have their misconceptions about music, so I tried to cater it to them away because I feel like it’s an interesting style that a lot of people can enjoy.”

Reflecting on a memorable moment in his music career, Newby recalls, “Probably in June 2022. I started doing a bunch of performances and was able to play on some great local stages that allowed me to find new fans. It’s one thing for the crowd to get hyped, but it’s different when you’re shopping in the store or just out walking, and people are asking me if I’m ‘Newby’ because they’ve seen me perform or they follow me on social media. I thought that was pretty exciting. I genuinely like to connect with the people who listen to my music and support me.”

When it comes to his creative process, Newby shares, “I just go off the energy. I like to make a mind map, that thing they teach us in grade 2, yeah. Write a word and keep writing words to describe the story/situation you’re writing about. I love using paper and pen! I always have a notebook handy.” He emphasizes the importance of having fun and not overthinking, citing his song “Yoshi” as an example of how he wowed himself by adopting a carefree approach.

Newby acknowledges the challenges he faced as a rising artist. “The first challenge I faced was my own criticism,” he admits. “Nobody knew I could rap or was even into music like that. So people had a lot to say, and I wasn’t really sure about going for it all the way. I wasn’t super confident, I knew many hip hop artists have a certain look that I just didn’t have, and it was hard for people to see what I was doing. I wasn’t getting taken seriously, heck, I didn’t even curse in my music.”

Looking ahead, Newby envisions a future beyond music. “I really enjoy writing stories and scripts, so I’ll for sure be getting more into production when I can,” he shares. “I already do a little bit of it now, making my own videos and whatnot, but I’m excited to produce television shows and stuff like that, just original television shows. I love writing, and I love telling stories, and I feel like I would be really good at it. So no matter what happens with my music career, I’m definitely going to be pursuing production.”

Apart from his music, Newby’s creative talents extend to fashion. “I’ve been into fashion for a while, but I don’t really do much of it now,” he mentions. “I love sewing and designing clothes and accessories. I used to make my Halloween costumes, like everything myself. I always had a creative mind and had to figure out how to express it in different ways.”

Addressing streaming revenue disparity — Songwriters contemplate “should we strike too?”

On Monday, June 12, a panel discussion surrounding the topic of fair pay for songwriters took place at the Gibson Theater in Hollywood, CA. The event, put together by The 100 Percenters, in collaboration with Industry Blackout, provided a platform for industry professionals and songwriters to engage in a meaningful dialogue and seek solutions.

In an era where streaming has become a dominant force in the music industry, the livelihoods of songwriters have been significantly impacted, to say the least. The question of fair compensation from record labels has sparked a growing concern among these creative minds. Drawing inspiration from the recent Writers Guild of America (WGA) Strike, songwriters are contemplating a pivotal question: “Should we strike too?

The event mainly consisted of a panel discussion, which provided an invaluable platform for songwriters. They used this platform to voice their concerns, share their experiences, and propose innovative solutions. Billboard journalists Colin Stutz and Neena Rouhani actively moderated the panel discussion, which included notable guests and speakers such as:

Bonnie McKee – @bonniemckee – Grammy Nominated Songwriter
Kaydence Krysiuk @kaydence – 2x Grammy Winning Songwriter
Mag Rodriguez – @magisformagic – CEO of @EVEN.biz
Tiffany Red – @iamtiffanyred – Founder of The 100 Percenters & Grammy Winning Songwriter
Tallie Spencer – @talliespencer – Host

Songwriters address the problem with imbalanced revenue

According to a recent report by The Recording Academy, songwriters receive a mere 15.1% of the total streaming revenue in the United States. In contrast, record labels and artists claim a significant share of the pie. According to Variety, the label’s percentage range from 52% to 57%, while Digital Service Providers (DSPs) such as Spotify and Apple Music take home 27.9% to 32.9%. This glaring disparity places songwriters at a significant disadvantage, hindering their ability to sustain themselves financially.

During the panel, Tiffany Red emphasized the need for collective action, stating, “It’s time for songwriters to unite and demand fair compensation for their invaluable contributions.”

The event provided songwriters with a platform to voice their concerns and share their experiences, shedding light on the challenges they face in the industry.

As songwriter Bonnie McKee aptly put it, “We’re gonna get better work out of songwriters when we feel appreciated and seen. “There’s been straight up sessions where I don’t feel safe, it’s the wild west. Something’s gotta change.”

Moving forward, how to get involved and support the #PaySongwriters movement

The conclusion of the event consisted of a Q&A with the panelists and audience members. The Q&A session of the event lasted for about 30-minutes, with various questions being posed and new discussions being had.

Grammy-Award winning and nominated songwriters such as Ink (@spillmyink), Mike Hunnid (@100prf), and many others, were in attendance and took their turns asking questions and contributing to the discussion.

As the dominance of streaming continues to reshape the music industry, songwriters find themselves at the forefront of a battle for fair compensation. The revenue disparity, coupled with diminished royalties and limited negotiating power, has raised significant concerns among the songwriting community.

As the industry moves forward, it is essential for music execs to take action and address the systemic issues that hinder fair compensation for songwriters. By doing so, we can pave the way for a brighter future where songwriters receive the recognition and compensation they rightfully deserve.

Those who are interested in getting involved can do so by staying up to date with The 100 Percenters on Instagram.
