New Music Friday: The best new songs that dropped this week

new songs

Sorting through new songs in hopes of discovering a certified banger can be challenging at times. But luckily, RemixdMag makes it easier week after week by finding records that slap the most.

In our list, expect to see a mesh of upcoming rappers, highly-esteemed rappers, and other kinds of artists with a similar goal to put hip-hop on the map.

Read our selection below:

Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice – “Barbie Girl (with Aqua)”

Interpolating Aqua’s “Barbie Girl,” Nicki Minaj’s new song of the same name sees herself and Ice Spice doing a call-and-response technique about their excellence before delivering their own verses. The record also merges drill, Jersey Club, and other playful-styled arrangements. On Nicki Minaj’s “Barbie Girl,” the hip-hop queen and “Princess Diana” femcee showcase how they’re girl’s girl. Ice Spice spits, “all of the Barbies is pretty,” while Minaj raps, “All of the Barbies is bad/It girls, and we ain’t playing tag.”

Elsewhere, the rap girlies illustrate how “we got bars, but we ain’t bailin’ out,” Themes revolving around confidence, their unmatched pen game, and silencing haters also come into play. Equipped with clever entendres, a feel-good style, and an infectious hook, “Barbie Girl” effortlessly cements itself as a banger this summer.

Nicki Minaj teased “Barbie Girl” via Instagram last Sunday. “I’m a 10, so I pull in a KEN,” she wrote in the caption of her IG post. “#BarbieWorld 6.23.23, #BarbieMovie. Pre-Save NOW!!” The two rappers recently collaborated on Spice’s “Princess Diana (Remix).”

Young Thug – BUSINESS IS BUSINESS

Following his 2021 album, Punk, is his jam-packed offering BUSINESS IS BUSINESS. The rapper teased BUSINESS IS BUSINESS this week on Instagram with a cryptic QR code and switched profile picture. Featuring Drake, 21 SavageFutureLil Uzi VertTravis Scott, and more, Thugger’s newest album takes a page from his personal experiences and only proves that the rapper’s capable of breaking any barrier meant to halt his progression. The LP is also scattered with exquisite production from none other than Metro Boomin. He’s currently awaiting trial for the ongoing YSL Rico case.

Lil Tjay – “June 22nd”

On the heels of his upcoming project, 222 is Lil Tjay’s new song “June 22nd.” The moniker reflects the year anniversary of Lil Tjay being shot multiple times in an attempted robbery. Themes in this record also take from the tragic moment. With each rhyme, Lil Tjay proves his prowess in storytelling and creating substantial records. The dark, gloomy trap beat ultimately finds the rapper explaining what happened up to that moment. “I took a look, I saw the car, and then I went right back to sleep/I heard,/”That’s that car again,” Tjay explains. “What? Never, now it’s beef/I grab my Glock, and I’m like, “Now I’m finna flip ’em on this street”/Bro’s like, “Nah, Tjay, you wildin'”/All I do is suck my teeth.”

GloRilla – “Put It On Da Floor (GloMix)”

Earlier this month, GloRilla unveiled that she was interested in remixing Latto’s “Put It On Da Floor.” Now it seems like the CMG Records signee has finally done so. In under three minutes, the “Tomorrow 2” hitmaker uses her signature technique to speak about how she’s “eating these b*tches up” and how she “raps on these beats like she doesn’t even need a flow.” Deeper into her remix of “Put It On Da Floor,” she addresses the females secretly envious of her and her preference for older gentlemen. The new song also sees GloRilla flexing about “constantly birthing b*tches.” On June 6, GloRilla said she wanted to remix Latto’s hit single on her Twitter page. “Ian did a remix since I blew up, but da Streets keep telling me to remix put it on da floor & I think I’m finna listen,” GloRilla wrote.

Curtis Waters – “PETTY (feat. TiaCorine)”

Curtis Waters gets back at the haters with an extensive list of accomplishments in “Petty.” Dispersing honest lyrics over the polished, animated trap cut, the Guin Records signee claps back with the following line, “I’ve been that guy already / y’all done fucked up, I’m petty.”

Throughout “Petty,” the Nepali-born artist expresses that he’s had it “up to here” with the disrespect and is done with being cordial towards others. “I might just move out to the mountains/I aint finished the mission yet/I’m done with the dance/I aint shaking hands,” he delivers in a pristine flow.

The 2023 XXL Freshman, TiaCorine, mirrors Curtis’ energy and expresses how she always stays true to herself and ignores others’ opinions. In a melodic flow, TiaCorine spits, “I do what I want okay/Cause I never could listen/To n***a who money too short/At da end of the day/Slay/You still hatin on me.” Curtis Water’s new song comes on the heels of his project, BAD SON.

Dana Williams – “Laundry”

On the heels of Dana Williams’ EP Talk Therapy is “Laundry.” The laid-back guitar-kissed R&B offering sees the singer expressing how she’s had it up to here with a lover’s inconsistency. As the song progresses, Dana Williams expresses how frustrated by the long distance and imbalance in their relationship. This person’s wishy-washy ways make Dana question if they “even done your own laundry.” In “Laundry,” Dana Williams also wonders if someone else is in the picture. “These thoughts accumulate/Cause we don’t even know how to communicate/Wonder if someone else is calling,” she sings.

BigXthaPlug – “Boy (feat. Big Yavo)”

BigXthaPlug teamed up with Big Yavo for their Cam’Ron-sampled record, “Boy.” Taking on a more velvety trap form, BigXthaPlug and Big Yavo go bar-for-bar with their distinctive flows and rap about being in a different tax bracket than the average Joe. The track is also smothered with some tough talk from BigXthaPlug and Big Yavo, along with bars about their excellence and success. Elsewhere, the rappers make it known that they aren’t looking to settle down anytime soon. Big Yavo keeps it 100 when spitting, “Little bruh Glock ain’t regular it’s rigged/Play me like a square imma fire this sig/Before I spoil a shorty gotta take care of my kids.”
