Booney tells Remixd Magazine about how his debut project came together.
All the way from the Southside of Atlanta, GA, Booney (@lifeofbooney) has built a reputation for his soulful raps. That reputation came from years of grinding in local shows, trying to get his musical message heard. He recently spoke with Remixd Magazine to discuss his newly released project.
The name “Booney” is more than just a stage name, as it’s a childhood name that holds a lot of sentimental value to him. When asked why he chose to go the personal route for his stage moniker, he shared, “I always try to invite people to know my life through my music so I decided to go with a name that people call.” This is just one of the many callback moments that he’s able to use music to be fully transparent about his humble beginnings.
Rising from humble beginnings and finding inspiration
Every artist has a different purpose for making music, whether it’s for fun, money, or even fame. But for Booney, music is a form of therapy and an outlet to say his peace. “Music is universal & one of the best forms of communication to me. Personally, I am inspired by great quotes, which is why I always intend to leave great quotes for my listeners,” he shared.
Musically, Booney finds inspiration from some of the most lyrical storytellers that have ever graced a mic. Heavy hitters like Jay Z and J Cole paved the way for new-age lyricists like Booney to pride themselves on pure lyrical ability. Coming from the South, stylistically he’s able to add his own flavor to his raps without sacrificing any bars.
Booney is currently promoting his debut project, Cheap Liquor. For this to be his first solo full-length release, it contains so much heart and depth. Thanks to his high level of authenticity, he never wastes the opportunity to pull listeners behind the curtain about his humble beginnings. He further explained that “This project shows how certain circumstances can shape people into who they are.”
It’s not an everyday occurrence to see an artist come out of the gate swinging and making a profound statement on their debut release. But that just speaks to the advanced level of his artistry, that he brilliantly puts on display for listeners on Cheap Liquor.
Takeaway message
When asked what audiences can expect next, Booney mentioned, “We have some visuals on the way & ‘Cheap Liquor’ events coming up very soon.”
