How Veetchy is uniting Afrobeats and R&B through his latest song ‘Ocean’

Veetchy

Hailing from the vibrant city of Douala, Cameroon, and currently based in Chino, California, Veetchy (@veetchyofficial), whose real name is Osiris Sielatshom, is an artist whose unique blend of Afrobeats and R&B is making waves. In an exclusive interview, he provides insights into his artistic journey and his latest song, “Ocean.”

Veetchy’s artist name traces its roots back to his middle school days when he was part of a boys band. He used to go by the name “VeetchyBaby.” As he matured, he decided to shed the “baby” part and opted for a cleaner, catchier name, “Veetchy.” He still incorporates the playful “Veetchy baby oh na na na” as his tagline in his music.

Describing his sound, Veetchy explains that it’s a fusion of the African influences he grew up with and the R&B music that resonated with him. This unique blend gives his music an international vibe, making him an Afrobeats and R&B artist. “Writing songs and coming up with melodies is something that feels inherent to me,” Veetchy tells Remixd Magazine.

Passion for music, for Veetchy, is a means to express his personal experiences, emotions, and observations. However, while he may not have the craziest stories to tell, he channels the experiences of others into his songs. This makes his music a direct reflection of the world around him.

Veetchy’s musical influences range from Toto Guillame and Fally Ipupa, iconic figures in Makossa music in Cameroon, to the legendary Michael Jackson, Richard Bona, and Chris Brown. Each of these artists has left an indelible mark on his musical journey, shaping his sound in various ways.

Moreover, his latest release, “Ocean,” revolves around themes of intimacy and sensuality. It’s a conversation about desire and attraction, wrapped in smooth R&B melodies. Veetchy wanted to convey a strong sense of longing and anticipation without resorting to explicit language, showcasing the appeal of subtlety and passion in music. “Ocean is a conversation about intimacy and sensuality,” Veetchy says. “Bedroom talk essentially. I wanted to figure out a way, to tell someone you are pursuing that, ‘it’s going down tonight,’ without being explicit or vulgar. I think there is a profound appeal and sexiness when someone is able to communicate their strong desire towards someone without saying out loud “I wanna f**k!”

“Ocean” was released earlier this year in February, with the video dropping on October 4th. Veetchy is already working on new songs, with a focus on Afrobeats and covers. He aims to diversify his catalog and grow his audience through a series of singles.

The message Veetchy hopes his fans take away from his music is simple but powerful: “I hope that my songs can inspire people to spread love and be loved.” His music serves as a conduit for fostering connections and emotions.

YoungRichHarlem’s artist name reflects his roots and the cities that have significantly impacted his life: Richmond and Harlem. Describing his sound is no easy feat; it’s a blend of various styles, making it hard to pin down to a specific region. He explains, “My sound is hard to come by when mentioning my region. It’s far from Bay Area. I have a universal flow with heavy east coast cadence and lyrical ability with west coast lingo. I have my southern flow and R&B vibes, but it’s very unpredictable.”

What fuels his passion for music is the legacy passed down by his Uncle Mike, who educated him on music’s evolution, genres, and the business side of things. The ability to write and create music came naturally to him, but it was the inspiration from his family, particularly his Uncle Mike, that solidified his passion for the art.
