Christina Smith pushes through boundaries with her classical vocals; shares new single “Half Past L8”

Christina Smith

Hailing from Scarborough Canada, Christina Smith (@christna.smith) is no stranger to the spotlight. You may recognize her from her 2022 appearance on ‘Canada’s Got Talent.’ Her Classical infused vocals undeniably set her apart from her peers. As she is gearing up for her release of her new single “Half Past L8,” Christina shared her musical journey and details on her single exclusively with Remixd Magazine.

Christina’s musical journey began as early as the age of two. Growing up the only child, she found music to be her purpose while enduring feelings of isolation. Holding on to music, she faced the challenge of finding her sound. Eventually, she discovered her classical sound. “It wasn’t until I moved to Kingston, Jamaica that I really found my niche in music. Up until then, I never had a belting range, so I thought I couldn’t actually sing. It was my vocal teacher in Jamaica that showed me that I was just singing the wrong material for my voice,” she said.

Christina’s unique sound is a combination of elements. Some of her musical influences include FKA twigs, Halle Bailey, Kathleen Battle and Qveen Herby. “I like to describe my sound as classical fusion. It pulls from the vocal technique and delivery of classical music, and the instrumentation of contemporary music (including, R&B, pop, house and rock),” she said.

Christina Smith gears up for “Half Past L8” and another television appearance

Moreover, Christina’s latest single “Half Past  L8” is scheduled for release on February 16th. Staying true to her Niche, fans can expect her higher range vocals with a twist. “Think… Destiny’s Child transports (down the rabbit hole, of course) to the Bridgerton universe. What can I say? I’m a theatre kid at heart! I wanted this piece to reflect a delicate dance between the Romantic Classical era and 90s RnB with a theme that would have been relevant in both times,” she said.

Furthermore, Christina is looking to maintain the heart of classical music. “I hope that fans and other artists take away the fact that classical music is far from rigid or outdated, and that just like any other genre it can be reinvented and reimagined, because the themes that were relevant then are still relevant now,” she said. She stands firm on standing out within your artistry.

“More importantly though, I hope that my fans take away how important it is push the boundaries of what people expect from you. The critics will always exist in the spaces they only dream of taking up. Our power and our responsibility as artists is in our ability to be true to ourselves and our art – even as both evolve with time,” she said.

Furthermore, Christia is making her return to the big screen. However, her family will be joining her this time. Christina and her family will appear as contestants on ‘Family Feud Canada.’ Conveniently, she this is set to air just a day before the release of her new single. Read our list below:

Yeat – 2093

Yeat seemingly strives to live life with his future in mind via 2093. Upholding Yeat’s signature braggadocio rhymes, the Portland rapper also lets fans into his inner world by dropping introspective rhymes. For instance, in “Nothing Change,” Yeat delivers, “I just wanna feel things/I wanna feel real/I wanna feel like normal human, don’t wan’ pop a pill/I wash my hands of all the blood and then I keep it real.” Other songs in 2093, find Yeat detailing his charm, luxurious lifestyle, and how he sometimes uses his vices to escape reality. 2093 is backed by a myriad of bass-heavy intergalactic and charged-up drill beats. The project holds features from Lil Wayne and Future

During an interview last year, Yeat spoke about how this project differs from his last one, AftërLyfe. “Between the last record and this upcoming one, it feels like a ten-album difference in time. People have no idea what it’s going to sound like. It’s like a dystopian society,” Yeat stated.

Tierra Whack – “27 Club”

Tierra Whack’s “27 Club” symbolizes the age when some notable musicians decided to take their lives or left the world too soon. Backed by a mellow alternative soundscape, Tierra Whack delivers resonating lyrics for the ones who feel like their lives are crashing down. “When the world seems like it’s against you/When your friends and family forget you/It ain’t really hard to convince you/Lookin’ for somethin’ to commit to,” she sings. “27 Club” is dedicated to people currently facing dark moments. Moreover, “27 Club” tells these individuals that they will find the light again.

About the single, Tierra Whack said: “I was in a dark place for a long time, and no one knew. I found my way out and made a choice to keep living. I wanna be completely transparent with my ‘whackos’ because I’m human just like you and we all have rough days. The key is to keep going! Be kind… you never know what someone else is going through. For the longest time, I felt like I didn’t belong, but now I know that I do, and my hope is for other people to know that, too.”

Bryson Tiller – “Whatever She Wants”

As the title suggests, Bryson Tiller raps about giving his special someone “Whatever She Wants.” While delving into his rhyming bag on a bass-centered trap beat, the R&B singer talks about spoiling the Mrs. at all costs. Similarly, Bryson Tiller details how he keeps a smile on her face and unapologetically takes the “simp” title with much pride. Lyrics like “Then she got to trippin’ over nothin’ yet again/Got a n***a feelin’ like a sucker yet again/Close off my emotion then I rush to let her in” showcases how Bryson Tiller will love his person at all costs. Although they sometimes don’t see eye-to-eye, that doesn’t stop the musician from wining and dining with her. “She piss me off, somehow she still get whatever she want,” he delivers.

Niko Brim – 4DACOMPANY PACK

Niko Brim’s 4DACOMPANY PACK is a 2-track offering that exudes confidence to the fullest extent. The themes in Niko Brim’s EP focus on loyalty, fighting off bad vibes, and perseverance while showing others what it means to bet on yourself. Similarly, Niko Brim’s singles “4DACOMPANY” and “Cut The Lights” showcase his strong ability to adapt to any beat thrown his way. Like he raps in the first record off 4DACOMPANY, “Like drums, percussion/My flow disgusting.” Listening in, 4DACOMPANY focuses on Niko Brim’s unwavering gratitude for getting an opportunity to share his gift with others. Lyrics like “Present for this moment/Thank the Lord cause he aligned it/All this for my city cause they know the real behind it n***a,” from “Cut The Lights” bring the narrative home.

Kenny Muney – “Hate It There”

Kenny Muney describes how he intends to treat his love interest better than her current partner in “Hate It There.” While using a drowsy flow, the rapper speaks about his humble beginnings before dropping rhymes that explain how his crush’s significant other is lacking in the relationship department. “Nothing like that other n***a/She really hating him.Talking bout this her safe place/She know I’m not gon’ play with them,” he raps. In the rest of his melancholic trap offering, Kenny Muney talks about his charm, outstanding qualities, and how, although he’s “been through some s**t, she makes me [him] feel better.” The rapper’s new song can be found on his upcoming project, Blue Winter, which debuts in March.

Dreezy – “Bitch Duh”

Known for her unwavering confidence and sharp lyricism, Dreezy’s music is a force to be reckoned with. Dreezy’s rise to prominence in the music industry has been nothing short of remarkable. With a string of buzzing mixtapes and notable collaborations under her belt, including a remix of “Chiraq” alongside Nicki Minaj and Lil Herb, she has solidified herself as a formidable presence in hip-hop. Her talent has earned her recognition from industry heavyweights like Common, who featured her on “Hustle Harder” from his album “Nobody’s Smiling.” With “B*tch Duh” serving as the first taste of what’s to come, fans can expect Dreezy to continue pushing boundaries and delivering the raw energy and authenticity that have made her a standout in the rap game.
