Interview: LA’s Bensbeendead opens up about vulnerable single, ‘On Your Way Home’

Initially from Portland, Maine, but now based in LA, Bensbeendead (@bensbeendead) is truly starting to make a name for himself. Making his musical debut in 2019, he is living proof that artist development is still alive based on his newest release. He recently spoke with Remixd Magazine to break down how he tapped into another level for this year.

The origin of his stage name comes from a time when he felt it was time to rebrand himself. Originally going by his real name, he decided to adopt a new moniker to represent a fresh start. Having his career reborn to a new name, Bensbeendead was very intentional about reinventing himself with a completely new sound.

Drawing inspiration

Bensbeendead’s sound can be best described as “Dark R&B.” This sub-genre of R&B utilizes dark sonic productions to pair with airy vocals and harmonies. Inspired by generational talents like Frank Ocean and Bon Iver, they paved the way for him to grow into his greatness.

Benbeensdead’s latest single, “On Your Way Home” demonstrated that authentic vulnerability is making a return to R&B. Truthfully, it felt like this element was starting to go extinct, but this track gave me hope for the future.

“At its core, this song is about vulnerability,”Bensbeendead explained. “I wanted to really capture the feeling of needing someone, of needing help, but not being able to ask.”

What the Future Holds for Bensbeendead

As Bensbeendead has his sights on building off this momentum, listeners can anticipate more remarkable music throughout 2024. By not pressuring himself to instantly enter album mode, he plans to maintain his consistency with endless singles.

Striving to always give his all, I appreciate that Ben ensures everything he makes is in the best interest of his fans. Sure, he could be pumping out projects like a conveyor belt, like most artists. But Benbeensdead chooses not to as he understands the value of quality over quantity.

“I want fans to know much thought and work I put into these songs because I believe people need to hear things like this,” he says.

One that sweeps through dusty trails and wide-open prairies to lasso you in. Step aside from the big city; it’s time to dust the stadium dirt off your disco-themed shoes and put on your finest cowboy boots.

It’s time to saddle up for an otherworldly musical experience! Fans are parking their Lexuses and throwing their keys up ever since the crossover hitmaker debuted her highly anticipated first country-tinged album, Act II: Cowboy Carter.

Club YeeHaw!: Cowboy Carter Enters the Chat

The most recent release serves as a return from the Queen Bey herself with the follow-up to The Renaissance. Which is all apart of a musical trilogy that is expected to move the musical masses. Since stepping into the spotlight, Beyoncé has always been in the forefront of the frontier on the search to find new territories to explore. With that being said, her latest offering Act II: Cowboy Carter is no different.

Beyoncé’s leap into country is a gesture that ought to be celebrated for its authentic audacity. The sound resonates beyond genre, reaching into the strands of cultural fabric shared by country music fans and the BeyHive. Her compassion for the genre is evident. It’s well-chronicled in her in-depth studying of country’s historic archive, ancestral roots, including long and hard reflection on country music’s deep roots in America.

With Cowboy Carter, the multi-Grammy-winning musical icon marries her soul-stirring voice with stories and melodies that evoke the heartland. The volume of tracks on this album is a love letter to a genre she’s grown to respect, understand, and, in true Beyoncé fashion, dare to redefine.

The trail of collaborators

With that being said, Beyoncé brings in the banner. Flying the flag high – she doesn’t venture into these new pastures alone. In fact, Cowboy Carter has collaborations that create a sacred knot connecting the past and present. In doing so, it reads like a who’s who of pop and country royalty. Alongside Beyoncé, legends like Willie Nelson, Linda Martell, Dolly Parton and The-Dream. In addition to audio appearances with well-known vocalists like Miley Cyrus. As well as up-and-coming talents like Willie Jones, Tanner Adell, Raphael Saadiq, Shaboozey and many more, ride the sonic waves, all adding a unique taste to the musical palette.

Charting new terrains and the relevance of “AMERIICAN REQUIEM”

Cowboy Carter broke new ground by charting 26 out of 27 tracks within the U.S. iTunes Top 100, within 24 hours of release. This seismic shift isn’t just about numbers; it’s about the essence. The standout single “AMERIICAN REQUIEM” is a heartfelt story, lyrically daring and both a celebration and critique of the genre, as well as Beyoncé’s multi-layered American spirit. It speaks volumes about her capability to infuse herself into any musical space without diluting the message of the medium.

Response from the BeyHive and beyond

The BeyHive’s buzz around Cowboy Carter is electrifying, to say the least. Fans are captivated by the album’s structure, its seamless transitions, and its innate ability to tell a story from start to finish. Track by track, meme by meme, they show that. The Beyoncé experience transcends beyond labels; it’s about the storyline. The artwork of the album symbolizes this transition beautifully as well with its overt Lone Star-affection, hinting at a unified cultural compass.

Nonetheless, Beyoncé has once again stopped the world with Cowboy Carter. She showcases that the stage isn’t confined to a specific spotlight. It grows and expands in harmony with the artist. Beyoncé, who has transcended her former glory, displays an unrestrained range of artistic talent that is both inclusive and eclectic.

Beyoncé is breaking barriers in her cowboy boots

The Cowboy Carter golden horseshoe may just be the shuffle in a musical deck that redefines the meaning of crossover. It resonates not only in the hearts of her loyal listeners but also in the halls of music history. Overall, It serves as a testimony to its importance in today’s culture. It’s a charge toward our shared conscience, challenging us to reflect thoughtfully and in-depth on the songs we listen to and the performers we praise. Beyoncé, boldly in cowboy boots, is not just an image to behold; it’s a legacy to chase.
