Will Cherry‘s latest album, Somewhere in Ohio…, explores themes of self-discovery, perseverance, and the power of belief. If you’re not familiar with Will Cherry (@willcherrry), he is an artist who has a sound of his own & is based in Cleveland, Ohio. The project, Somewhere in Ohio…, blends different sounds of hip-hop, jungle, gospel, folk and R&B throughout. In addition, it’s a conceptual album designed to inspire listeners and prompt them. The album, which starts with the question “What do you want?” and ends with the mic turned to the audience, is designed to encourage listeners to reflect on their own desires and the journeys they can take to achieve them. For Cherry, this album is call to action for everyone who listens to find the courage to pursue their dreams. No matter where they start.
In an interview with Remixd Magazine, Cherry describes his creative process as being deeply personal. Moreover, Cherry took initiative to produce, mix, master, and even design the cover for Somewhere in Ohio… in the comfort of his bedroom. This hands-on approach helped him ensure that the final product remained authentic to his vision. “Doing things myself is just the most efficient way to get things done,” he says. “It truly helps me give a more authentic and singular vision.” His dedication to every detail in the album’s creation adds to the raw, unfiltered energy that permeates the project.
Inspirations
Inspired by Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon, Cherry sought to capture vulnerability and emotional depth in his music. The album also reflects the unique sound of Cleveland. Thus, blending hip-hop with influences from jungle, gospel, folk, and R&B. This genre fusion adds a level of warmth and texture that sets Somewhere in Ohio… apart, showing Cherry’s versatility as an artist.
“One of my favorite compliments about the album has been that it doesn’t feel out of place or like I’m doing too much while trying all these things,” he says. “Which means a lot because I did want to show my versatility and step outside of what people would predict from a rapper.”
The album also features collaborations with established producers like Sango and local artists such as Bankie and Kipp Stone, enriching the project with a wide range of sounds. The accompanying short film, which Cherry directed and starred in, further expands on the album’s themes, providing visual depth and context to the music.
Remixd Mag noted that there’s a duality in his work between frustration at the glass ceiling and a deep hopefulness. We asked Cherry how he maintains that balance, both in his music and in his life.
Cherry responded, “I think I maintain the balance by always looking forward, and looking at the positive side of things. There have been so many weird or disappointing moments I’ve encountered, and I know I’m not alone in that. But I always hope for the best and bet on myself to find a way out, no matter how bad the situation is. Self belief is like my greatest superpower at this point, and I feel like that has kept me going to this point.”
As Cherry continues to push boundaries creatively, he’s also looking ahead to future projects. Fans can expect more music, visual content, and a docu-series that will expand on the Somewhere in Ohio… universe. For Cherry, it’s all about perseverance and impact: “I want to impact the world in a positive way with this art.” With his dedication and unwavering belief in himself, there’s no limit to what he can achieve.
