Interview: Josia on creatively crafting dark R&B through his music

Josia

Josia is the artist you should know this year. He creates music that blends an immersive emotional experience. Blending dark R&B with moody, ambient melodies and deep storytelling, his sound is raw, haunting, and deeply personal. Influenced by The Weeknd and shaped by his own life experiences, Josia has crafted a style that resonates with those who find solace in music’s darker shades.

“I’ve always really connected to dark R&B,” he shares with Remixd Magazine. “It’s the best way for me to portray my emotions and talk about my experiences. It took time to get to this point where I can confidently say I’ve found my own sound, but I’m very happy with how it turned out. Especially knowing that there are people out there who relate to my music.”

The Weeknd’s influence runs deep in Josia’s artistry. “His music got me through the lowest and darkest times of my life,” Josia explains. “The way he expresses pain and struggle while singing so angelically over haunting instrumentals has always fascinated me. You can definitely hear his influence in my music, but I’m also pushing myself to create something unique.”

For Josia, music serves as an outlet. His lyrics are deeply personal, a reflection of his thoughts and emotions. “I feel comfortable putting my emotions into my music, even when I struggle to talk about them in person,” he admits. “Sometimes I question whether I should really put myself out there like that, especially with unreleased music. But I know there are people who can relate, and that’s the beauty of music.”

Growing up in Germany with Ethiopian and Eritrean roots, Josia’s cultural background has shaped him in many ways. “I grew up in a Habesha household, which will always influence me,” he says. “We have a rich and beautiful culture, and my upbringing has made me who I am today, so it definitely impacts my music.”

Navigating the music industry as an independent artist comes with both challenges and freedom. “I’m lucky to have friends in the underground scene who help me on my journey,” he shares. “Nowadays, making music and having a great marketing strategy go hand in hand, which is tough because, as an artist, I just want to focus on the music. That’s one of the hardest parts of being independent.” Still, Josia remains grateful for his progress. “Looking back even a year ago, I see how far I’ve come. And we’re just getting started.”

Dark R&B continues to evolve, and while the genre’s boundaries are shifting, Josia remains focused on staying true to his artistry. “The genre has had so many outside influences that it’s becoming harder to classify certain songs as dark R&B or even alternative R&B,” he explains. “I don’t know where it’s heading, but I don’t want to box myself in. At the end of the day, I just make the music that I love.”

For those listening to his music for the first time, Josia hopes they feel something real. “I hope they enjoy it. And if they’re going through similar situations, I want them to know they’re not alone,” he says. “Making music helps me heal, and I hope it does the same for others.”

Robby Adams blends the past and future of Rock ‘n’ Roll and takes things to “Another Level”

Robby Adams

Robby Adams (@robbyadamsiv) isn’t just making music, he’s crafting a sonic experience that spans decades and genres. With a sound rooted in the eclectic fusion of ‘70s rock ‘n’ roll, Bossa Nova, funk, fusion, and R&B, Adams is a self-taught musician who thrives on curiosity and experimentation. His approach, influenced by legends like Lenny Kravitz, Prince, and David Bowie, has led him to create a distinctive style that feels both nostalgic and innovative.

“I developed a passion for music early on,” Adams says to Remixd Magazine. “I was always branching out, discovering artists and genres I’d never heard before. That curiosity shaped my sound.”

As an artist who prefers to learn by doing, Adams’ journey has been defined by trial and error. Though he took brief lessons in tenor saxophone and piano, he found his most significant growth came through independent exploration and collaborations with fellow musicians. Thus, moving to Paris four years ago was a transformative moment. Immersing him in a pool of talent that reshaped his artistic vision.

His recording process mirrors his ability to blend classic and modern elements. “I record both digitally and with analog,” he laughs. Robby Adams knows the balance between honoring the past and pushing sonic boundaries. That philosophy extends to his vision for rock’s evolution. Thus, keeping the genre’s legacy alive while infusing it with fresh influences and bold instrumentation. “Epic guitar solos are a must,” he says. “I want to blend the genres I love and create my own style of rock.”

When it comes to songwriting, Adams describes his process as instinctive. “I take a little bit from everything. I love a good rhythm section. Funk rhythms, jazz sax, and a strong bassline. I’ll mess around on my keyboard or program a drum beat, and it all flows from there.” Lyrically, his inspiration comes from poetry. Moreover, often repurposing lines he’s written long before they find their way into a song.

Now, with new music on the horizon, Adams is embracing the journey. “I procrastinated releasing music for so long, trying to make everything perfect. But now, I’m just putting it out there.” With a few more singles on the way and a record in the works, he’s ready for listeners to dive into his evolving sound.

“I want people to hear my music and think, ‘This guy’s a risk taker.’”

Antonenow premieres new single “Fire” featuring Elxjh

Antonenow

At just 16 years old, Florida-based rapper, producer, and creator Antonenow is already making waves in the underground hip-hop scene. With a sound that bridges generations, he has been steadily gaining recognition from industry veterans and rising stars alike. He blends classic hip-hop influences with modern underground sensibilities. This has gotten him attention from people such as Statik Selektah, Lute (Dreamville), mynameisntjmack, SolChyld, and members of Pivot Gang (Saba, DaeDae, etc.). His latest release, “Fire,” featuring the incredibly talented young R&B artist Elxjh, marks a bold new chapter in his musical journey.

Antonenow describes “Fire” as a defining moment in his evolving sound. “This project definitely steers away from my normal sound, and it’s a lot more unique than all the music that people know me for,” he explains. “This song really helps begin this new era of Antonenow, and this new sound that I’ve been experimenting with.”

Inspired by artists like Jean Dawson, Paris Texas, Baby Keem, Teezo Touchdown, and Childish Gambino, alongside hip-hop legends such as Big L, André 3000, Big K.R.I.T., J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar—Antonenow has carefully honed his craft. Instead of mimicking his influences, he masterfully integrates subtle elements of their artistry into his own distinct style.

“Fire” is a deeply personal track that resonates on multiple levels. “We’ve all gone through tough times, especially when it comes to a person of interest or a loved one,” he tells Remixd Magazine. “I just wanted to highlight that in this song.”

The song took on an even deeper meaning as it coincided with the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. “Even though the fire makes it hard to breathe, I will still persevere and stay strong through these tough times. That’s what I wanted to encompass in the lyrics.”

Antonenow Has A Sound That Transcends Generations

With Cuban-Dominican roots, Antonenow is determined to infuse more of his cultural heritage into his music. “My culture has shaped who I am and my creativity 1000%,” he says. His ability to craft music that appeals to fans of both classic hip-hop and the modern underground scene makes “Fire” a perfect addition to any alternative hip-hop playlist, regional playlists focusing on Southern artists, or those celebrating emerging talent from Florida.

Antonenow is proving that age is just a number when it comes to passion and artistry. His dedication, perseverance, and willingness to experiment with his sound are setting him apart in the music industry. “I just really hope people love this project as much as I do,” he says. “If you would’ve told me when I was 13 years old that I would’ve been making a rock song on the same album as a hip-hop song, I would’ve thought you were crazy.”

With “Fire,” Antonenow is carving out his own lane, blending inspiration with originality, and solidifying himself as an artist to watch in the evolving hip-hop landscape.
