Stephan Folkes invites listeners to “Say It Like You Mean It” with empowering single

Stephan Folkes

UK-based artist Stephan Folkes is making an unforgettable impression with his debut single, “Say it like you mean it.” The song is a bold blend of alternative pop and indie R&B that speaks to the importance of self-worth, clarity in communication, and emotional intuition.

“I’m a genre-blending artist,” Folkes said during an interview Q&A. “I let the music guide me. If a melody feels like soft rock, funk, indie pop, or R&B etc, I follow that direction without overthinking it. For me, it’s all about the feeling. Over-analyzing can lead to over questioning oneself. And that’s not productive for creativity.”

“Say it like you mean it,” which released on February 28, 2025, draws inspiration from Folkes’ personal journey. Moreover, Stephan faced and overcame significant hurdles, including his experiences navigating life as a special needs individual. In addition, he was hospitalized in his pre-teens. That resilience fuels his passion for creating music that empowers listeners.

The importance of time and energy

“This record conveys the importance of valuing one’s time and energy,” he says. “The song highlights self-worth and encourages listeners to learn to read between the lines, recognizing that not all communication is direct.”

Folkes’ sound is deeply influenced by legends like Prince, Michael Jackson, and George Michael, as well as modern icons like Billie Eilish. However, it’s his genre-fluid style and instinctual approach to songwriting that truly set him apart.

“I approach Music like an MMA fighter,” he continued. “Why stick to one style when you can draw from many elements to create something dynamic and expressive? Music is an art and art has no limits.”

There are no gimmicks with Stephan Folkes. Even his artist name is a reflection of his authenticity. “No alter egos. No filters. Just me,” he affirms. This ethos carries through “Say it like you mean it.”

“As a man, I’ve pursued people who showed subtle signs they weren’t interested,” Folkes said. “And I got hurt. This song is for anyone who’s ever ignored their gut feeling.”

Moreover, while family connections, such as his estranged cousin and fellow UK artist Deyaz, have shaped parts of his story, it’s the people outside of blood ties who’ve lifted him up the most.

“For me, any setbacks in my life only fuels my determination to stay positive, grow, and persevere. I’m committed to never losing sight of my brand/identity.”

Thus, as Folkes continues to evolve, he’s preparing to drop his third single “Somebody out there?” on May 9, and his debut album Hazard on June 6.

With “Say it like you mean it,” Stephan Folkes isn’t just asking for honesty. He’s living it.
