Actively Black NYFW experience put music at the heart of Black culture at Sony Hall

Actively Black

The Actively Black NYFW (@activelyblack) Experience, presented by Mielle Organics, transformed Sony Hall into a celebration of Black culture, history, and music. Titled “This Is Not a Fashion Show,” the event turned the runway into a stage where sound, storytelling, and style intertwined, creating a night that resonated far beyond fashion.

From the red carpet, musical legends and cultural icons set the tone. Lauryn Hill, Ghostface Killah, Tyrese, and other star-studded attendees arrived in NYFW-worthy ensembles. However, this was an evening that honored the rhythm of Black excellence as much as its style. Inside, the show’s soundtrack amplified every moment. From civil rights tributes to runway reveals, the evening reminded attendees of music’s enduring power in shaping culture and memory.

Intergenerational connections were highlighted through performances and visual storytelling. Moreover, this included tributes to the legacies of Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, represented by their families. For instance, Sara Marley, Bob Marley’s granddaughter, and Lisane Basquiat led these cultural homages. They demonstrated how music and artistry continue to define and inspire Black identity. Moreover, the Michael Jackson segment riled up the crowd and reinforced the night’s emphasis on performance as a form of storytelling.

Historic figures, civil rights leaders, and athletes shared the spotlight. Additionally, their appearances were underscored by curated musical moments that elevated each segment into an emotional and celebratory experience. Moreover, the “Black Women Are Superheroes” collection was accompanied by a soundscape celebrating female leadership and resilience. It was truly an evening to remember.

Lastly, the night ended in a joyful, music-infused finale. In addition, Actively Black founders Lanny Smith and Bianca Winslow revealed they are expecting a baby boy!

Through curated performances, tributes, and collaborations, the Actively Black NYFW Experience showcased how music remains central to Black storytelling. Sony Hall became a stage where history, heritage, and rhythm converged in a night that will echo across culture for years to come.
