Hip-hop artist AJ McQueen (@ajmcqueen) has never been one to follow the crowd. With the release of his new album When We Evolve, the Houston-based poet, activist, and artist delivers his most personal and transformational work to date. The 20-track project is out now, and he has a message to deliver.
More than just a rap album, When We Evolve is a full-body experience. It opens with a striking interlude from Cedric the Entertainer and unfolds into a bold exploration of Black consciousness, pain, growth, and rebirth. Across the project, AJ blends his signature lyricism with spiritual insight, creating a space for reflection and uplift. His voice cuts through with clarity and conviction, offering a soundtrack for anyone moving through pain toward purpose.
Track seven, “Gifted,” arrives with a visual that captures AJ at his sharpest. Over heavy drums and an urgent flow, he lays out a mission statement filled with grit and grace. The video carries that same rawness. Showing the tension between survival and success without losing hope.

Another standout is track nine, “Blue Spirulina” featuring Foggie Raw. This one leans into a jazzier groove, creating a smooth back-and-forth between two lyrical stylists. The visuals for that track tap into nostalgia and warmth, rounding out a project that’s as textured emotionally as it is musically.
When We Evolve follows a consistent run from AJ that includes God Body, Free Food Program, and Sorry Ma, I Was Distracted. Each release has marked a chapter in his evolution, and this latest drop feels like the culmination. It’s rooted in struggle but reaches for peace and higher awareness.
