best new songs

The best new drops from the week of July 5.

Remixd Magazine’s best new songs this week include some heavy hitters. From Eminem‘s “Tobey” to Ken Carson‘s “more chaos,” our picks of the week are sure to be songs you’ll add to your rotation.

Read our selections below:

Eminem – “Tobey (feat. BabyTron and Big Sean)”

Serving as a single off his forthcoming album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), Eminem’s “Tobey (feat. BabyTron and Big Sean)” finds the three Detroit rhymers taking pride in their certified G.O.A.T status. Comparing their powerful gift of gab to Spider-Man’s very own Toby Maguire getting bit by an Araneus Oscorpeus, Em, Sean Don, and BabyTron drop some flex-worthy bars about their prominence, luxurious lifestyle, and much more.

Eminem asks explicitly for his rightful flowers after discovering that mediocre rappers have taken the top spot for blog-curated lists. “Ain’t feelin’ your top five favorite rappers/So I know they ’bout to be pissed at me,” he raps. “But this, to me, is a mystery/How rappers I’ve already ripped could be.”

The rappers also forewarn the opps not to try their luck when trying to beat them. In other instances of the song, the trio MCs reflect on their come-up. The song ends with recognition for each other’s untouchable rap prowess. Em raps “Way beyond crazy, Shady gone, but hey, maybe I am the goat.” He continues: “That bit Sean and BabyTron, and that’s why they be on the s**t they be on.”

Fabolous – “To the Moon (feat. French Montana and Fivio Foreign)”

Fabolous links up with French Montana and Fivio Foreign for their new spine-chilling trap song “To the Moon.” This collaborative effort sees the three rappers expressing the qualities they look for in a partner. Similarly, French Montana, Fabolous, and Fivio Foreign list the things that will make them take someone special to the moon.

Once Fabolous hops on the mic, he says although he’s looking for his better half, he’s enjoying the single life. Meanwhile, Fivio Foreign details how he’d be the perfect man for the right woman in his corner. French Montana matches the two New York MC’s energy by alluding that he’ll give his woman what she truly wants. “She said plea ain’t nothing here for free/You could buy her what she wants/Not what she needs,” he raps.

I’m in love with the box/I’mma take her to the top,” he continues. “I just need a bad b***h/That’s gon be loyal like The Lox.” The rapper’s new single comes one month before his highly anticipated Gotta See It to Believe It tour.

Quavo – “Tough (feat. Lana Del Rey)”

Quavo and Lana Del Rey’s “Tough” is a powerful anthem that highlights their resilience. Over the hypnotic alternative pop beat, the former Migos member and the Born to Die singer reflect on the obstacles they overcame as individuals. “Like the 808s beatin’ in the trunk in Atlanta, it was tough/It was kinda hard for me,” Quavo raps. “Standin’ through the storm, still shinin’ like a diamond in the rough.” Once the pre-chorus comes in, the Georgia rhymer advises listeners always to find light in the darkness and how important it is to stay close to your family. Lana Del Rey matches the uplifting theme of the song in an ethereal intonation by comparing others’ strength during tough times to things like “the scuff on a pair of old leather boots” or “the stuff in your grandpa’s glass,” to name a few.

Childish Gambino – “Lithonia”

Childish Gambino’s minimalistic rock meets rap single “Lithonia” examines the fictional character Cody LaRae, who discovers that time waits for no one. In a storytelling cadence, the Bando Stone & the New World artist reveals the hard truth about society, insinuating that in this day and age, it’s every man for himself. Once the chorus comes in, Childish Gambino takes on the role of Cody LaRae, who addresses those passing judgment since he returned from a hiatus.

Although he feels “liberated” and “over-medicated,” he’s aware that some people aren’t pleased with his disappearance. “Damn, what you want?/I can tell by the look on your face,” Childish Gambino delivers. “Let me outta here/I’ve been gone so long/Don’t you know that/This is the moment?/You’re watching us throw it away.” Before the song ends, Childish Gambino shares that Cody LaRae has learned that his time off didn’t heavily impact others. In the words of Donald Glover, “He had a break/He’s findin’ out/That nobody gives a f**k.”

Ken Carson – “more chaos”

Ken Carson declares that he’s creating “more chaos” in his new video-game-esque trap single. In three minutes, the Opium artist drops braggadocious bars about running up a bag, his charm, and fighting back the opps. While using a melodic flow, he raps, “Pack-a-Punch my gun/I pull the Ray out/I ride in the Rolls Royce truck, got the stars in this b***h.” Elsewhere, Ken Carson spits, “I f**k the check up, get it back, that’s how it goes/I put the racks up to save it for a rainy day/All these b***hes the same, all these h*es the same way/I just got her number/Bet I f**ked the same day.” Ken Carson’s new LP A Great Chaos (Deluxe) features the hit songs “Jennifer’s Body” and “Fighting My Demons.”

Jay Park – “McNasty”

Korean-American rapper Jay Park searches for someone to match his freak in “McNasty.” As the beat merges playful trap, EDM, and pop arrangements, Jay Park delivers suggestive rhymes about wanting a lady in the streets but a freak in the sheets. He raps, “I’m usually a gentleman/But if you want tonight, I can be your bad boy/In conversations be polite/But in bed, I want to see your attitude.” By the second verse, he compliments his admirer before explaining why other couples can’t match their vibe. Lyrics like “Your every move is a scene of perfection/Can’t miss a second so I’m dialed in” and “Still they ain’t fuckin’** with us (Uh)/WONSOJU by the bottle, take a cup and pop up/Attack with them hips, let the vibes flow,” take the narrative home.
