If there’s any artist who doesn’t get enough credit it has to be Charlie Wilson. However, it looks like the legend is getting his moment. In fact, this week when he will be honored with the 2,770th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on January 29th.
Charlie Wilson is getting a song
Emotions are guaranteed to be running high at this ceremony for a multitude of reasons. How poetic is it that Charlie Wilson will also be happily celebrating his 71st birthday on the day of the ceremony? But a what great full-circle moment that he receives a star on the very streets where he was once homeless.
After The Gap Band disbanded, Charlie Wilson experienced some terrible times that left him as a homeless addict. Struggling to survive on the streets, he met the love of his life at rehab and turned his life around. Despite all of the tragedy he’s endured, it’s paid off now that he’s been married & sober for 29 years.
Not only will Wilson be accepting this star, but he will be joined by some of his esteemed peers. Heavy hitters like Babyface and Snoop Dogg are expected to make a special appearance on behalf of their long-time friend.
It’s pretty nice to see legends get their flowers while they’re here to receive them. Charlie Wilson had an added layer of coolness to me in recent years because I actively saw him collaborate with newer artists. The fact that he has songs with “anti-mainstream” artists like Don Toliver and Tyler the Creator truly shows he’s genuine.
Congrats to Charlie Wilson on this remarkable achievement, even though it’s overdue. I hope to see more legends be honored similar to him.
