Doechii makes history with her first Grammy win

Doechii becomes the third women to win “Best Rap Album” joining Lauryn Hill and Cardi B.

Following the successful release of her groundbreaking mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal, Doechii wins big at the 67th annual Grammy Awards. On Sunday, she received a winning moment in the “Rap Album Of The Year” category. Doechii wins the category over fellow nominees J. Cole, Common & Pete Rock, Eminem, and Future & Metro Boomin. Additionally, the milestone makes history as she becomes the third woman ever to win the major award. In 1997, Lauryn Hill became the first woman to win the award alongside her group members, The Fugees, for their album The Score. In 2019, Cardi B won for her debut album Invasion Of Privacy. Notably, Cardi B also presented the award to Doechii all while passing the torch to her as the third female recipient.

Doechii’s mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal immediately received high praise following it’s release this passed August. The project is home to singles such as “Nissan Altima” and “Denial Is A River.” Following her win, she performed the singles “Denial Is A River” and “Catfish.” Social media praised Doechii for her incredible and heartfelt speech.

Doechii gives heartfelt acceptance speech

Moreover, Doechii’s win was met with a heartfelt speech just over two minute speech. With tears in her eyes, she shared the trials and tribulations she faced while developing the project. Additionally, she shared inspiring words to her fans while highlighting and praising black women.

“I know that there is some black girl out there, so many black women that are out here watching me right now,” Doechii said. “I want to tell you, you can do it. Anything is possible. Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you that tell you that you can’t be here, that you’re too dark or that you’re not smart enough. Or that you’re too dramatic or you’re too loud. You are exactly who you need to be, to be right where you are and I’m a testimony.”

Doechii immediately began to celebrate her groundbreaking win. Just minutes after her award acceptance speech, she shared a surprise new single called “Nosebleeds.” Throughout the single, she celebrates her win with boastful lyricism all while giving an additional acceptance speech.
