Grammy-nominated artist & songwriter, Playy, discusses latest project “Never Too Late”

Playy is a multi-talented artist and songwriter from Houston and has been extremely involved in the music industry early in his career. Previously signed to Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and Interscope records, the artist is now independent and pursuing his music career on his own terms.

The Houston-born artist got his first taste of success with the smash hit, “My Chick Bad,” by Ludacris featuring Nicki Minaj, where his voice makes up the hook of the song. “My Chick Bad” also hit the No. 2 spot on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop charts and, was nominated for a Grammy award for Best Rap Performance in 2011. Since his appearance on the hit track, Playy also has managed to accumulate other impressive credits including a hit feature with Twista (“I Do”) and appearance and songwriting credits for songstress Kelly Rowland.

The songwriter, who’s based in Atlanta now, revealed that some of his main influences include Kid Cudi, Lil Wayne, and DJ Screw, to name a few.

Playy recently interviewed with RemixdMag on IG live and provided details about his latest EP. His project “Never Too Late,” which dropped on April 13th, 2020, features 8 tracks that detail his upbringing. “It’s about coming up, the whole process of that, and me being ready to be one of the ones on top,” Playy said during the interview.

He said that this project differs from other music that he’s put out because he believes he’s grown a lot as an artist and has gotten a chance to develop his sound more. “Back then I was just putting words together, now I’m more knowledgeable about what I’m saying,” he told RemixdMag.

When asked about the highlight of his music career, he responded that performing “Birthday Dress” on 106 & Park was one of his favorite moments. Around the same time period, he also got a chance to perform on the BET college tour with rappers Kendrick Lamar and Yelawolf.

During the interview, the entertainer detailed the current journey of what being an independent artist is like for him. Some of the benefits he listed were that “you get to own all your music, and you can drop your music whenever you want.” But he noted that some of the downsides of not working with a label included “not having as many connections,” which is a common response for many independent artists.

But overall, Playy says that he is enjoying being able to put out content by his own means. As far as advice for rising talent and people pursuing a career in music, he says to “Just keep going” and that “it’s never too late.” He encouraged his audience to stand out and not having to be complacent with trends.

“You don’t have to follow trends,” Playy said. “Stand out, don’t fit in. You can do it. You don’t gotta follow everyone else, just do you.”

As far as upcoming projects, the artist told RemixdMag that he has a few projects on the way, one titled “Lone Star,” and another called “Lost Souls,” which is 90% done. Also, he’s going to be featured on artist Popp Culture‘s “Coronaviral,” single that’s dropping this Friday, May 8th.

You can follow Playy on Instagram, and stream his music on all platforms.
