Interview: DuPont Brass is elevating DC’s eclectic soul scene on the ‘Professional Development’ journey

Their journey takes us on a rhythmic expedition through the realm of “Eclectic Soul,” an artful fusion of rap, singing, instrumental prowess, and an undeniable soulfulness that resonates at the core. With a name deeply rooted in the backdrop of their city, DuPont Brass has carved a unique space for themselves, bringing their eclectic blend of influences to life.

Remixd Magazine spoke with the group to learn more about their journey.

Comprising ten talented members—Deacon Izzy (MC), MK Zulu (MC/Flugelhorn), RobStocks (Vocals/Saxophone), Cousin Chris (Trumpet), Fuzzy the Plug (Trombone), Ant (Trumpet/MD), Bassheavyslim (Sousaphone/Bass), Jeauxsmeaux (Keys), TurnUpDeante (Guitar), and Stan Banks Jr (Drums)—DuPont Brass draws inspiration from their local environment. The name itself, DuPont Brass, traces back to their early days, where their captivating performances at the DuPont Circle Metro Station in DC earned them recognition.

Describing their sound as “Eclectic Soul,” DuPont Brass’s music embodies the spirit of legends like Earth, Wind & Fire, and the modernity of The Roots. This collective raps, sings, and skillfully plays instruments, weaving a tapestry of soulful expressions that resonate deeply.

“One reason we are passionate is because it allows us to express ourselves and everyone needs some channel of self expression,” DuPont Brass told Remixd Magazine. “We’ re inspired by our love for music and the fun we have playing together. It’s hard work but it doesn’t feel as much like a job.”

Passion for music fuels the collective’s drive, offering a channel for self-expression and growth. Their love for music and the joy they find in playing together transforms their hard work into an exhilarating and fulfilling endeavor.

Drawing from a spectrum of influences, including EWF, The Roots, Kanye West, Anderson .Paak, Kendrick Lamar, and J. Cole, DuPont Brass’s artistry is a harmonious blend of diverse inspirations.

Their latest project, aptly titled “Professional Development,” mirrors their journey as professionals in the music industry. The collective’s growth is evident in the project, reflected in its subject matter, lyrical depth, and refined production.

“We hope they know that the DMV has incredible musical talent and DuPont Brass is at the forefront of that sound,” the group told RemixdMag.

Set to drop in mid-September during their Summer Vibes Tour, “Professional Development” promises an elevated experience, showcasing the evolution of DuPont Brass’s artistry. The tour, spanning August 24th to September 23rd, will take them across cities such as DC, Chicago, Pennsylvania, Milwaukee, South Dakota, Virginia, Maryland, and Upstate New York.
