Interview: Rising R&B artist Girlfriend finds power in vulnerability on new EP ‘It’s Complicated’

Rising R&B artist Girlfriend (@girlfriend.__) is carving her own lane with her latest project, It’s Complicated. The result is a deeply personal body of work that reflects emotional nuance, growth, and raw honesty. Rooted in self-expression and built on real-life experiences, the EP mirrors the complexities of modern love while doubling as a bold extension of her artist identity. She spoke with Remixd Magazine to discuss themes of the project, collaborating with Tierra Whack, creating music for over 10 years, and what’s next for her.

“When I say girlfriend, I always want people to feel like they have a friend,” Girlfriend says of how she got her artist name. “Somebody that’s gonna be there for you.”

So, Girlfriend is a direct nod to her name and also what she represents emotionally.

Though she’s now based in L.A., Girlfriend’s journey started in Mississippi. She recorded her first song in seventh grade and hasn’t looked back since. “Even when I was 13, people told me to keep going,” she says. “They played my song on the school intercom every day because they thought it was so good.”

Now, fast-forward to years later, she’s still making music and also sharing her vulnerability with the world. In this most recent project ‘It’s Complicated,’ Girlfriend explains how the themes of the music doesn’t stem from one singular heartbreak, but a timeline of different real moments.

“It wasn’t all based on the same relationship or situationship or whatever,” she explains. “But I just think as I have like different experiences, I’ll take those experiences and put it in a song. So eventually it becomes something that feels really personable and authentic. So even if I make the music over the span of a year, it’ll feel like an actual story. Because those are actual things I was going through.”

Moreover, she describes her creative process is collaborative, guided by her own vision alongside her team. Standout singles like “Obsessed” have already started turning heads. “I knew that one had to go on the project,” she says confidently.

One major highlight? Her collab with Tierra Whack on “Bon Voyage.” “I didn’t even expect her verse to come through,” Girlfriend says, “but I’ve always been a fan, so it was a crazy full-circle moment.”

“That song came together because I was at a performance, and I think we ended up getting the contact from her team,” she continued.

As for what’s next, Girlfriend is staying locked in.

“I have always said, the day that I just get to wake up and do what I love every day? That’s success for me,” she said. “I already feel successful, and I already feel super thankful to be able to touch anybody.”

“My plan is to just keep waking up, work hard every day and just getting his music out,” Girlfriend concluded.

With her refreshing honesty and clear vision, Girlfriend isn’t just here to sing about complicated love. She’s making people feel understood through every lyric.
