June Freedom
June Freedom breaks boundaries and elevates music with his sound.

Los Angeles-based artist June Freedom is making music that transcend borders with his latest project, 7 SEAS. In an exclusive interview with Remixd Magazine, the Cape Verdean-born artist shared insights into his musical journey, the inspiration behind 7 SEAS, and what fans can expect from his upcoming Europe tour.

From Cape Verde to LA: June Freedom’s musical journey

Hailing from the vibrant intersection of Boston, Cape Verde, New York City, and now calling Los Angeles home, June Freedom’s journey is as diverse as the influences he brings into his music. As he explains, “I’d describe my sound as a melting pot, the same way they describe the people from Cabo Verde.” June Freedom found his artist name during a pivotal moment of transition. “June Freedom,” he declares, was born from a spontaneous revelation while strumming his guitar. It perfectly encapsulates his musical evolution and the sense of liberation he experiences when creating music.

“One day, while my team and family were brainstorming on a name for my next chapter … I was simply sitting on a couch strumming the guitar while everyone in the room was shooting names around,” he said. “I looked up and caught a glimpse of my guitar case, and it had an emblem that said “Freedom” on it, I said out loud “June Freedom,” and we all looked at each other and knew it was it. It just felt right and true to my future.”

June Freedom’s latest project, 7 SEAS, dropped in October of this year, and it’s a celebration of global rhythms and connections. The album, a follow-up to his debut, Anchor Baby, represents a fusion of Cape Verdean heritage with international flavors that resonate across cultures. “It’s about connection and feeling,” June passionately states. Reflecting on the unexpected success of Anchor Baby, June describes how it propelled him to create 7 SEAS. “I really just watched the music start spreading through the globe. And we’re going to take this new one even further!”

Moreover, as 2024 kicks off, June Freedom is gearing up for his first-ever European tour, starting in Rotterdam and spanning cities like Berlin, Paris, London, Madrid, and more. The artist, known for his energetic and soulful performances, is set to bring the magic of 7 SEAS to stages across the continent. Speaking about the tour, June says, “This January, I’ll be starting my first tour ever in Europe. It was a serious labor of love, and I can’t wait for it to touch more ears.”

What’s next on the agena

June Freedom hopes that his music brings “feel good” moments, shared times with loved ones, and memorable nights in the club for his fans. Through 7 SEAS, he aims to inspire listeners to explore African genres and discover new artists featured on the album.

“Creating music allows me to escape from all the worries of the world,” June Freedom explains. “When it’s me and the mic, I’m just locked in on the sound, the vibe, and the melodies while I let the lyrics flow from my subconscious.”
