Interview: Meet Canada’s rising melancholic producer, SLMN

Music’s something that SLMN was exposed to at an early age, but it isn’t something originally in the cards for him. Born Mohamed Sulaiman of Sudanese descent, his dad introduced him to his homeland’s music, which still influences the music he makes today. “As a kid, I was heavily influenced by the style and melodies as my dad played the Middle Eastern instrumental called the oud”. The Toronto-based producer lived a different life, working as a tech coordinator. Later down the line, the support from artists and fans gave him a newfound hunger to take his production further.

“Seeing the impact my production had on artists & fans gave me a belief in myself that I’ve never experienced before,” SLMN said in a recent interview with RemixdMag.

One of his early supporters included the Neptunes’ former manager Rob Walker. Since Rob discovered SLMN, their relationship has been fruitful. Their work together would lead to the producer signing his first publishing deal with Sony, negotiated by Rob. “[The deal] essentially gave me the confidence that I could sustain financial independence working just on music.”

Since then, the trajectory for SLMN’s career has only gone up. His sound is soulful and drum heavy, creating ideal sound settings for artists to make melodically expressive music. His list of production credits are becoming lengthy, garnering collaborations with Russ, Roy Wood$, Lil Yachty, and a lot more. One of his biggest personal accomplishments is his production for “Caution”, the title track for Mariah Carey’s 2018 album. “The album debuted at #1 on Billboard for top R&B & Hip-Hop albums. That fact that the song produced was also the title track for the album was also a very proud moment.”

He’s also perfecting a sound for his own projects as well. The Late Bloomer EP released in mid 2020 received positive fanfare, with over 5 million global streams to date. Right now, he’s preparing to release more music with artists that he’s currently developing. Soon after, he plans to follow up with another EP, set to release .

In terms of the future, SLMN has his focus set not only on leveling up his accolades, but his sound as well. Now solidified in the game, he has his eyes set on achieving even more. “[I want] to get nominated for a Grammy, produce a top ten Billboard single, and grow my label to sign multiple acts in the future.” He also said that he will be dropping a Splice Original sample pack near the end of the year. As the year progresses, SLMN will be somebody to watch out for as he plans to make major moves.

His newest song “Where Did You Go” with Kvn Rose ft. anders is out now — you can check it out below.
