Interview: Roya1 talks new music, his upbringings, and more

For Roya1, music is more than just a career and a dream: it is what’s has given him direction. Since his upbringing in Northern Cali, it’s always been an essential part as he sought find his own direction. “[Music] kept me out of trouble a lot of the time growing up. It’s my therapy and my safe place ’til this day”. It was through his curiosity that he became driven to become better over time. Even today, his proudest moments lie in becoming a better engineer and producer, instead of sticking just being a recording artist.

The more he became obsessed with the sounds around him, the more determined he became to challenge himself to get better. “Competing with myself… that keeps me inspired, as well as finding new, good music”. His early exposure to genres like Neo-soul, rap, and jazz made him a sponge for new sounds. If anything, it’s the reason why his music holds so much versatility today. By the time he turned 15, Roya1 was already considering the thought of making music.

The Bay Area-bred songwriter is a rapper with various melodies and a knack for moody lyrics that sets him apart from others. Many of his songs feature a nocturnal essence that makes his tracks great for late nights. He’s preparing to give listeners his latest offering with his latest Nasty EP — out now. Tapping into his sensual side, Roya1 focused on making a project for the ladies in his fanbase. “This project is about embracing the sensual side of things, love, passion and pleasure.” One track he’s excited to release off the project is “Do I Have Permission”, an ode to his naturally flirtatious ways with women. With another project already in progress, definitely look for the rapper to make some waves this year.
