Based in the vibrant city of Rotterdam, MiDi KwaKwa (@midi.kwakwa/) is an alternative R&B artist whose music is as layered and personal as her name. Born Mildred, her nickname “Midi” came from her young cousin’s sweet mispronunciation — a name that stuck and ultimately became part of her artistic identity. “KwaKwa” honors her late grandfather, Daniel KwaKwa Cobbinah, a surname that roots her music in heritage and strength. Together, MiDi KwaKwa reflects a beautiful fusion of past, present, and self.
“I’m passionate about music because I want people to feel,” MiDi KwaKwa says during an interview with Remixd Magazine. “I want my songs to help others tap into their emotions, reflect, heal, or just feel seen. Music has always inspired me that way, and now I want to be that source of inspiration for someone else.
In addition, her sound is uniquely her own. Moreover, imagine the emotional depth of contemporary R&B, but with genre-bending twists. From neo-soul and acoustic vibes to electronic edges and African rhythmic undertones. “It’s honest, sometimes raw, sometimes dreamy, sometimes sexy— but always expressive,” she continues.
Her music isn’t just about sound, it’s about feeling. Whether it’s helping someone heal, reflect, or simply feel seen, MiDi creates with intention and emotional resonance.
Furthermore, influenced by powerhouses like Solange, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, and Kelela, MiDi KwaKwa brings a refreshing vulnerability to the alt-R&B scene. Her latest EP, Moonflower, dives deep into personal transformation. Rooted in themes of mental health, love, sensuality, and self-discovery, the project reflects “the beauty and weight of being a Black woman.” Thus, it’s about moving through darkness and blooming anyway.
“Moonflower … is a reflection of the dark moments we go through,” she says. “And what we choose to become after them. For me, it’s both a release and a reclaiming.”
Moreover, while she’s keeping the details of her next project under wraps, fans can expect new music and performances in the UK and the Netherlands in the near future. For now, she invites listeners to sit with Moonflower. To feel, to reflect, and to remember that even in darkness, there’s light.
