Kendrick Lamar and his fellow label mates know how to have a good time while supporting a cause. The 11th annual Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) holiday concert in Watts took place on Thursday, Dec. 12 and was a night to remember. The event brought music, energy, and holiday cheer to the Nickerson Gardens community, for a good and important cause. The hip hop record label was founded by Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, and is home to SZA, Doechii, Isaiah Rashad, Jay Rock, ScHoolboy Q, and others.
Tiffith and other label members including Grammy Award-winning artist Jay Rock both grew up in the Nickerson Gardens community. So the event is the label’s way of acknowledging their roots while uplifting and providing resources back to their hometown.
Here’s a look at the standout moments from the unforgettable night.
Kendrick Lamar Invites Kids on Stage
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly Kendrick Lamar’s performance. The Compton legend, fresh off the release of GNX, delivered a powerful set that included fan favorites like “HUMBLE.” and “Squabble Up.” But what made the night truly special was when Kendrick invited local children to join him on stage during “Squabble Up.” Or as he referred to them, “my youngin’s!” Watching the kids have the time of their life was definitely a highlight.
SZA’s Soulful Set
SZA captivated the audience with her performance! She performed “Snooze” and “Kill Bill” had the crowd singing along in unison, word-for-word and bar-for-bar. On top of that, her outfit was fabulous.
GloRilla’s Surprise Performance
Just when fans thought the show was winding down, GloRilla surprised the crowd with a fiery performance of her hit “TGIF.” She stole the show with this moment, as fans cheered and screamed as they realized who came on stage.
The Line Was Wrapped Around The Block With Donations
In order to gain admission to the venue, attendees had to bring a toy or donation for the people of the community. That’s what makes this event so special, the commitment to giving back. Thousands of people gathered at the Nickerson Gardens Housing Projects to support this charitable cause.
SiR’s Performance Of “John Redcorn” at Sunset
SiR really stole the show when he performed “John Redcorn,” on stage. What made it magical was the sunset in the background while he was singing the smooth melody. The song already has an ethereal feel to it so the atmosphere only added to the vibe. It’s already one of the best R&B songs in the century, and he did not disappoint by singing it live.
The TDE holiday concert was filled with highlights. From Kendrick Lamar’s performance to SZA’s etherial vibes, the evening was a a celebration of music, community, and giving back in the purest form.
