The best new music from the week of February 20th!
It’s New Music Friday! Although, we are nearing the end of February, there’s still a load of music to be excited about. This week’s edition features standout releases from Baby Keem, Ty Dolla $ign, and SZA. Read on to find the latest tracks and albums that dropped this week.
New Music Friday Picks
Baby Keem – ‘Ca$ino’ (Album)
Eventually, there comes a time when the young artist you once loved becomes a full-on adult. A good example is Baby Keem’s new album, as he shows a more mature side while not sacrificing his youthful essence. In fact, he’s cracked the code about being able make fun music, while still having the substance to be taken seriously.
Ty Dolla $ign – “miss u 2” ft Leon Thomas
It should be noted that Ty Dolla $ign did a phenomenal job in breaking Leon Thomas. On a related note, this dynamic pair finally released their first collaboration and the end result is magic. Extending this idea even further, it would be amazing if they locked in for a full-length collab album. In reality, Ty’s solo music is not as polarizing as working with Leon would highlight what he’s best at.
SZA – “Save The Day”
In general, most children’s movie soundtracks are almost guaranteed to include a prominent black artist as they are known to deliver. Reinforcing this notion, Disney surely got their money’s worth with SZA as she gave her all in this single. In retrospect, she should’ve saved this track for herself, as it might turn into lost media.
R&B Corner
Jorja Smith – “Don’t Leave”
As a result of it being the 10-year anniversary of “Blue Lights,” Jorja sentimentally commemorated it with “Don’t Leave.” For this reason, it only made sense for her to revert to her old sound and it’s so nostalgic. In fact, it feels she felt the dissatisfaction and traveled back in time for the love of fan service.
Thundercat – “She Knows Too Much” ft Mac Miller
All in all, it’s truly a shame that Thundercat & Mac never got an LP together. Particularly, “She Knows Too Much” gives us a taste of what could’ve been. Undoubtedly, this song takes you through a rollercoaster of emotions, and the video is bound to make you shed a tear.
Shaleah Jean – “Right Back”
Notably, the city of Seattle has never had a reputation as a hub for music, especially R&B. Simply put, Shaleah Jean showcases that she has all the intangibles in her debut, “Right Back.” In the long run, she could certainly have a fruitful career based on her strong songwriting ability.
Rapper’s Delight
NAV – “Trimski” ft Young Thug
From here on out, we have to accept that the Young Thug we once loved is long gone. With respect to his iconic discography, “Trimski” is a reminder that he doesn’t possess the immense hunger that he once had. Not only that, but NAV doesn’t bring anything innovative, making this track a snooze fest.
Youngn MH – “Rush Hour”
Finally, our last spot of New Music Friday goes to Youngn MH. Similar to other NY rappers, he brings a level of ferocity to every track. Most importantly, this track served its purpose of building even more hype for his upcoming summer album, ‘Rush Hour.’
We hope you enjoyed this week’s edition of New Music Friday!
