New Music Friday Picks
Big 4
Bryson Tiller – ‘The Vices’ (Album)
Regardless of whether you’re a fan or not, it’s hard to deny Bryson Tiller‘s greatness. Tiller recently released the more rap-leaning side of his double album, which showcases his most underrated skill: rapping. Exactly 10 years removed from “Trap Soul,” he’s been able to evolve with the times, while perfectly blending the worlds of two genres.
JID – ‘God Does Like Ugly’ (Album)
If you value lyricism, get ready for an avalanche of technical rhyming on JID‘s new album. From front to back, it’s packed with obscure features from artists like Don Toliver to Baby Kia. While JID maintains a dominating presence that can typically stand on its own, the features provide room for his creative flows to explore. This is certainly the type of growth you want to see the 10+ year rap veteran.
Gunna – ‘The Last Wun’ (Album)
When it is all said and done, Gunna‘s legendary run prior to his jail stint for the YSL Rico trial. His departing album from the YSL label plays out as a fall from grace from the once promising star. Ironically, time has shown that his previous go-to producers such as Metro & Wheezy carried his earlier music. Hopefully, a fresh start with a new label situation can rejuvenate his reused flows.
Young Nudy – ‘PARADISE’ (Album)
When discussing the top ATL rappers, Young Nudy is never brought up. All that should change with the release of ‘PARADISE.’ His elite beat selection continues to be undefeated as every track feels like it was perfectly tailored for him. More importantly, he stays in his lane and within the confines of his sound without playing it too safe.
R&B Corner
Luck – ‘It Wasn’t Luck (LP)
Remember the name Luck, because she’s about to skyrocket into the mainstream based on her new release. Her debut, ‘It Wasn’t Luck’ proves she’s not playing any games and stepping into her own in the music industry. Her ability to lyrically go beneath the surface makes each track feel like its own individual experience.
Yya – “Slide”
Toronto’s Yya is certainly someone you need to keep on your music radar in the immediate future. Her debut single, “Slide” immediately puts into perspective how much of a student of the game she is. Her Brazilian background serves as the main ingredient in the creative dish she calls her sound.
Sol – “Lover Girl”
Chicago singer-songwriter, Sol, seems to be in a league of her own when it comes to channeling feminine energy through her music. “Lover Girl” stays true to the title as she brings out the more affectionate/softer side of her sound. Her whispering vocals are so angelic, like a cozy blanket tucking you in on a brisk day.
Booney – “What Do I Know”
Atlanta-based rapper, Booney has always had a knack for saying the right things at the right time. “What Do I Know” couldn’t have come at any better time as it tackles pushing through rough times. His impeccable pen game paints a vivid picture of the positive energy that he puts into his music.
We hope you enjoyed this week’s edition of New Music Friday!
