New Music Friday Picks
Long-Awaited Returns
Brent Faiyaz – “peter pan.”
After a 2-year break, Brent is finally back with a 2-pack of singles. As a result of all the recent social media backlash he has received about his singing style, it’s worth noting that he seems to be evolving. For instance, hearing him float over soul beats hits more different than you would expect.
JID – ‘GDLU (Preluxe)’ EP
JID has been putting up a legendary campaign as the best lyrical rapper in 2025. Doing the unthinkable, he released the “preluxe” to his new album, ‘God Don’t Like Ugly.’ Impressively, we get to see him go toe-to-toe with Eminem again and doesn’t back down. He allows his storytelling abilities to shine without sacrificing anything lyrically.
Chance the Rapper – “Tree” ft Lil Wayne & Smino
Continuing on his redemption tour, Chance has returned with a single featuring some big names. With Chance, it can be hit or miss having him collaborate with bigger artists. At the beginning of his career, the essence of his music was at its best when he was still underground. This time around, it’s sad to see he doesn’t revert to his glory days. Wayne steps up and closes it out with a strong verse.
Star-Studded Collabs
41 – “Naked” ft A Boogie Wit da Hoodie
Truthfully speaking, the trio of 41 is low-key, carrying the NY drill scene. We get to see them team up with fellow NY artist, A Boogie energetic new video, “Naked.” The video definitely reinforces their charisma as they have a blast on a night out. Seeing these past & present NY stars unite on one track feels like a symbolic “passing of the torch” moment.
Mozzy – “23 AND 1” ft YFN Lucci
Evidently, ATL’s Lucci has been all over the place since his release from jail, and his new feature confirms this. “23 AND 1” has him team up with West Coast wordsmith, Mozzy. By far, this is certainly one of those collaborations that I didn’t know I needed, as they reflect on their hardened jail experiences. Mozzy has made a lane for himself in motivational rap, and Lucci shows he can match his energy with ease.
A$AP Rocky – “pray4dagang” ft KayCyy
It’s easy to lose count on the number of singles A$AP Rocky has put out since he dropped ‘TESTING.’ Nevertheless, if you enjoy Rocky’s more melodic music like “Sundress,” then this song is for you. With that in mind, it’s dope to see him return to the soulful/mature version of himself that we haven’t seen in a while.
Sækyi – “GHANA BABY”
The rollout for Sækyi’s highly anticipated album has almost arrived. For this reason, he just released one last single titled “GHANA BABY.” Made in dedication to his upbringing, we see him sentimentally look back on his pursuit of stardom. Time and time again, he’s shown that he has all the potential in the world to be the face of a new wave.
Larry June & Cardo Wings – “Ya Feel Me” ft E-40
Dating back to the early 2010s, Cardo has been one of the most consistent producers in all of rap. The undefeated duo of Larry & Cardo links up on their new track, “Ya Feel Me.” Having E-40 as a guest feature makes this collaboration an important contribution to the Bay Area culture. In my opinion, it’s the perfect fit for a cookout playlist.
We hope you enjoyed this week’s version of New Music Friday.
