New Music Friday Picks
Lil Yachty – “Murda“
As lame as Lil Yachty can be, it’s hard to deny that he hasn’t been dropping great music lately. “Murda” is a great warm-up and possible spark to another legendary run like he had in 2023. It helps even more that he linked up with Cole Bennett for the music video as they never fail to create classics together. For someone who started off as a meme rapper, it’s remarkable how much he has evolved as a lyricist.
Glorilla – “Typa“
Summer has officially started, now that Glorilla has dropped a new single titled “TYPA.” For the past 2 summers, Glorilla has had the music game on lock and this summer is no different. Paying homage to Keyshia Cole’s classic, “Love,” she leans into her softer/affectionate side. By consistently making hit after hit, it’s almost impossible to deny Glorilla’s star power.
Lil Wayne – “Tha Carter VI” (Album)
Despite his legendary status, it’s time to have some uncomfortable conversations about Lil Wayne‘s decline. It’s a shame that the sixth installment of the “Tha Carter” series feels so out of place and disconnected from his previous releases. Now it would be unfair to say every song on this album is bad, but the majority of it does due to the awful production. With him being in his later years, he needs production that pushes him and to stay away from experimental beats.
Mariah Carey – “Type Dangerous”
Mariah Carey does not get the flowers she deserves for bridging the gap between R&B and hip-hop. In her comeback single, “Type Dangerous” she makes it a point not to hold anything back lyrically. Other than the hip-hop influence, this single doesn’t sound like anything she’s dropped before. It has a 90s feel while still possessing a modern bop.
Joyner Lucas – “One Of Them”
One of Joyner Lucas‘ biggest critiques is his ability to make forgettable songs. With the announcement of his new album and release of his new single, he seems to be turning over a new leaf. Known for his superb rapping ability, he reminds listeners that his flow is on another level. This single easily served its purpose by building even more hype for the album.
Josh Levi – “Don’t Go”
Grammy-nominated artist, Josh Levi recently announced his debut album alongside the release of one of the lead singles. “Don’t Go” is a subtle reminder that male R&B is making a comeback. Compared to his peers, he can both sing and dance, it’s safe to say Josh is the full package.
JustCallMeVeto – “Vibin With Veto” Deluxe (Album)
As a result of the success of Playboi Carti’s last album, there is no denying that the mixtape aesthetic is timeless. ATL’s JustCallMeVeto brings that same energy and intensity on the deluxe version of his album. In the same way that Carti utilized Swamp Izzo, Veto enlisted help from the legend himself, DJ Scream. As a result, his presence add more hype to Veto’s lyrical message.
Kenarri – “Bootay”
Often overlooked, the recipe for making a summer banger is creating a release that the ladies will love. Rising artist, Kenarri masterfully accomplished this formula in her new release, “Bootay.” The tropical-inspired production helps Kenarri get in her bag and tap into her feminine roots. , the only thing that this song is missing is a carefree/fun music video to match the song’s jolly energy.
We hope you enjoyed this week’s edition of New Music Friday.
