The best new music from the week of September 25th!
It’s New Music Friday! The fall season is underway and this season calls for new music and new beginnings for some artists. The hope is that we get a couple more big music moments of the year to end the year with a bang. This week’s edition of N.M.F. features standout releases from Doja Cat, Young Thug, Ice Spice, and many more. Read on to find the latest tracks and albums that dropped this week.
New Music Friday Picks
Doja Cat – ‘Vie’ (Album)
At the end of the day, no one can take away the fact that Doja Cat is truly a true artist in every aspect. ‘Vie’ puts that claim into perspective how she’s relatively on track to being a superstar. For this to be her fifth body of work, she’s already succeeding at keeping listeners on their toes. Certainly, this album is one of the most authentic attempts at the 80s sound from a mainstream artist.
Young Thug – ‘UY SCUTI’ (Album)
In reality, it’s time that we come to our senses and admit jail has changed Young Thug for the worse. For some reason, he refuses to show his versatility/range anymore and resorts to a “basic-trap” sound. I deeply miss his weirdo experimental side that we all grew to love like ‘SS2.’ However, if we can get him with some genre-bending producers he could be positioned for greatness.
Ice Spice – “Baddie Baddie”
As a result of NYC Fashion Week recently happening, it makes all the sense why Ice Spice wanted to capitalize with “Baddie Baddie.” Until now, I never realized how important, Riot is to her sound. Evidently, when she works with other producers they don’t bring the fire out of her like Riot did in this new single.
R&B Corner
Ty Dolla $ign – “SMILE BODY PRETTY FACE” ft Kodak Black & YG
After a stellar performance on ‘Vultures,’ Ty Dolla $ign is inching towards another full-length album. Cashing in on a few favors, he’s brought along YG & Kodak to hopefully crack the chart. The end result is a track you’ll likely forget due to the lack of chemistry and underwhelming performances.
Mariah Carey – ‘Here For It All’ (Album)
If I’m not mistaken, it’s been a 7-year hiatus for Mariah, and she’s finally back with a new album. Off the rip, I was easily impressed by how she’s able to make R&B authentic to the older generation while still keeping it fresh. Not only does she not overwhelm with a long tracklist, but she also carefully selected eleven tracks that reflect her newfound growth.
Ari Lennox – “Vacancy”
Due to the recent negative reception of her new music, I’m ecstatic that Ari linked with some legendary producers like JD for “Vacancy.” Their production skills have saved the day and put her in a new light. Nevertheless, cuffing season is in full swing thanks to her delicate songwriting.
Khalid – “out of body”
Out of all the music that has been released, Khalid’s new release has to be the most iconic. Truly stepping into a new era, he’s confidently not scared to rebrand and evolve with his craft. Even better, this track has an undeniable energy to it that is reminiscent of throwback basement parties.
Rapper’s Delight
Krown Vic – “Blue Bikinis” ft Noodah05
Ending things on a high note for New Music Friday, Virginia-based rapper, Krown Vic recently dropped, “Blue Bikinis.” With a feature from Lil Baby’s signee, Noodah05, this pair combines their ambitious energy for one song. The way they poetically trade verses about pursuing the woman of their dreams gives hope for the next generation.
We hope you enjoyed this week’s edition of New Music Friday!
