New Jersey-based independent rapper, Nook Lauren (@nook_4.4) recently announced the April release date for his upcoming album, Dying Breed, along with the release of the first single, “Not Ya Opp”. After introducing the world to the rough streets of Jersey in a DGB interview, the world fell in love with Nook Lauren’s music. His versatility in music is truly incomparable, as he is able to tap into different flows. Good luck with trying to find his signature sound, because I’ve seen him do everything from drill, club music, and even pain music like Rod Wave. So it wasn’t surprising to see him return to his drill side on “Not Ya Opp” and sound good in the process, didn’t come as a surprise to me.
“Just the fact that my generation is the last of a mature ahead of its time type of breed motivated the name of it itself. The songs that’s on the album is just me explaining & describing my reason for feeling like my generation is really a dying breed.” – Nook Lauren on upcoming album, Dying Breed
The track starts off with an acapella/raw version of the hook. While it may be slightly unorthodox, it’s very fitting as it prepares you for the wrath that Nook Lauren unleashes. As soon as the beat drops, the bass immediately hits you like a bus. Usually, I can’t get jiggy with New York-style drill music. Maybe they do things a bit differently in New Jersey when it comes to music, because “Not Ya Opp” showed me that their music can stand on its own two feet. So often we see neighboring states be influenced by their popping nearby state(ex South Carolina rap & Georgia rap). But that’s certainly not the case here. Even though it’s still drill music, it feels like Nook Lauren is introducing a new sound on this single as he effortlessly rides over the euphoric instrumental.
So if you’re like me and already starting to think drill music is starting to become played out, do me a favor and check out Nook Lauren’s latest track, “Not Ya Opp”. You might be surprised like I was. With its creative wordplay and addicting production, this track has immense replay value that will have you coming back.
