Boston’s own Planet Zuz, born Uzoma but known to friends as Zuzu, is bringing her unique sound and celestial vibe to the forefront with the re-release of her high school hit, “Boys/No Fool.” The track, originally crafted on GarageBand loops, dropped alongside a visually striking music video.
The song’s rawness and youthful defiance stem from a high school crush that went sour. “I was inspired by a boy who made me mad, as they often do,” Zuz tells Remixd Magazine. The accompanying video—featuring friends gambling with tarot cards and late-night trips to 7/11—reflects her interests. From “riot grrrl music to skaters.”
The video’s narrative cleverly centers around the tarot card “The Fool,” which also serves a metaphor for Zuz’s personal growth. “At the beginning, it’s upside down, symbolizing caution in relationships,” she explains. “By the end, it’s upright, representing new beginnings. It’s my way of saying, ‘I’m no fool for you anymore.’” This nuanced transformation aligns with the song’s theme of reclaiming self-worth and navigating love with resilience.
“I really leaned into the title: ‘boys/no fool,’ portraying myself as the fool in the relationships I’ve been in. At the beginning [of the video], there is a tarot card on my chest,” she explains. “It’s “The Fool.” It’s upside down, and according to Hindustan times, ‘if the Fool card appears in reverse during a love reading, it serves as a gentle reminder to exercise caution. It advises you to assess your intuition regarding the other person and the relationship.'”

Planet Zuz describes her sound as otherworldly yet intimate. “It’s like ascending to another planet with a quiet hum,” she says. “Or flipping through a magazine in your bedroom, singing to yourself with pink sheets and candles lit.” Influenced by artists like Björk, FKA Twigs, and Mitski, as well as Boston’s indie scene, her music transcends between dreamy and emotionally aware.
While “Boys/No Fool” has a playful, spiteful edge, Zuz hints at an upcoming EP with a more introspective tone. “It’s an analysis of how the mind and body are interconnected,” she shares, referencing themes like cosmic crushes and femme identity. Fans can already preview this shift in her track “Visions of Grandeur.”
Ultimately, Zuz hopes her music offers “comfort and familiarity” to listeners, particularly “awkward Black girls” navigating their own journeys. With “Boys/No Fool,” she’s inviting us all to float to Planet Zuz.
