Roderick Porter (@roderickporter) is closing the chapter on his deeply personal IMPERFECTIONST EP with the final and perhaps most vulnerable track yet, “Then / Now.” The single wraps a body of work that finds the rising alt-hip-hop artist turning inward, owning his flaws, confronting his past, and refusing to hide the messiness of being human.
“Then / Now” is truly a confession of vulnerability. Porter says he wrote the song in the aftermath of a manic depressive episode, capturing the emotional whiplash and mental contradictions that come with bipolar tendencies. “The chorus is sort of a long way of saying ‘hindsight is 20/20,’” Porter explains. “It’s the paradox of wishing you could have already made the mistakes on someone else so it didn’t have to ruin something precious.”
Roderick Porter leans into the chaos
The track leans into that emotional chaos, not with resolution, but with honesty. Over a cloudy, alt-rap beat, Porter paints a vivid portrait of heartbreak, self-awareness, and cognitive dissonance. Thus, you know you’re part of the problem but can’t help but rewrite the narrative. His voice cracks under the weight of the truth, and that’s the point. Much like the rest of IMPERFECTIONST (purposefully misspelled to highlight its theme), this song isn’t polished to perfection. It’s raw, textured, and real.
Porter hopes “Then / Now” can serve as a mirror for those who’ve battled overwhelming emotional tides, or offer insight for those trying to understand them. “I hope what people take away from the song is relating or learning a little about what it feels like to have such devastating emotions punch you in the face out of the blue,” he shares with Remixd Magazine.
With “Then / Now”, Roderick Porter closes out a project and invites listeners into his most fragile thoughts, reminding us that reflection, however painful, is its own form of healing.
