Painting vivid narratives of street struggles through his checkered past, Sacramento’s Mozzy stands as one of rap’s most respected raconteurs. Today, the Sacramento king offers a deeply introspective look at his life and legacy in the poignant new video single “If I Die Right Now.” The single artwork serves as a touching tribute to those he has lost over the years, reflecting on the impact of their absence.
Set against a soulful instrumental by KAVI, Mozzy, a native of Oak Park, takes a profound journey through his come-up, tracing back to his early days as Lil Tim. He shares the hardships he has endured, from the pain of losing family and friends to grappling with substance abuse. In Mozzy’s own words, “Overdosin’ ain’t that far off, it’s relatable.” Despite these tribulations and his trust issues, Mozzy finds solace in his craft and the unwavering love of his fans, wondering if, should he pass away now, his fans will miss him as much as his closest friends.
In the accompanying video, Mozzy turns the spotlight on the residents of Oak Park, Sacramento, who have faced similar struggles to his own and continue to stand strong.
Mozzy is back
The release of “If I Die Right Now” marks yet another chapter in a highly productive year for Mozzy. Before completing a one-year bid in May, he dropped the 6-track EP, “KOLLECT KALL,” featuring appearances from YFN Lucci, Baby Money, and fellow Sacramento artists E Mozzy and Celly Ru. This EP garnered widespread recognition from respected outlets like Pitchfork, Rap Radar, HotNewHipHop, Okayplayer, and more. Mozzy has also been heating up the streets with singles like the hard-hitting “Count Time” and the flex-heavy “10 Percent,” amassing millions of views.
Currently, Mozzy is hard at work on his forthcoming full-length album, following his 2022 release, “Survivor’s Guilt,” which was his first album under the CMG/Interscope Records partnership. Expected this fall, Mozzy’s next album is poised to further cement his status as one of the most acclaimed and popular street rappers of his generation. He has already earned two GOLD certifications from the RIAA as a lead artist, with “Excuse Me” and “Sleep Walkin,” and three more on his collaborations with Skylar Grey, Likybo, and $tupid Young.
Notably, Mozzy gained mainstream recognition in 2018 when his track “Sleep Walkin” featured in Ryan Coogler’s groundbreaking film, “Black Panther.” More recently, his street classic “Bladadah” secured the #68 spot on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Best West Coast Rap Songs of All Time.
With much more music and exciting news on the horizon, fans can anticipate a prolific and enduring career from Mozzy.
