Review: Sean Paul releases new album ‘Scorcha’ and performs it at the NOVO

After inspiring waistlines all of 2021 with his hit collaboration “Go Down Deh” and Grammy nominated album Live N Livin Sean Paul is back on the airwaves with Scorcha, a 16- song EP with features from Ty Dolla $ign, Pia Mia, Jada Kingdom, Sia, Gwen Steffani, Shenseea, Tove Lo, Stylo G, and Damian Marley.

The album dropped May 27 and that night Sean Paul took the stage at the Novo to perform the record for a sold out crowd, along with openers Jae Murphy and Yung Prince. Around 9:30 Sean took to the stage, flanked by a dancer on each side, his hype man and frequent collaborator Fahrenheit (aka Farenizzi) feeding on the energy of the crowd, to perform his popular dancehall hits like “Get Busy,”, “Temperature,”, and “I’m still in Love with You,”, as well as records from his new album such as; “Light My Fire”  featuring Shenseea and Gwen Stefani, and myriad of other nostalgia- inducing records.

The most notable aspect of the veteran Deejay’s live performance was his versatility. Sean Paul is a legend in both the dancehall and pop spaces, as well as a huge collaborator and influence in the Reggaeton space. In his live performance, Sean Paul masterfully switched between his different sounds and personas, complimenting Caribbean classics with Top 40 smashes and Reggaeton features. In a city with almost no notable Caribbean population, Sean Paul managed to bring out a diverse crowd and leave them satisfied, which may explain the international success of Dutty Paul. The 49 year old Deejay is a nine time nominated, Grammy award winning artist and has been creating hits and smashing barriers since 1994. Scorcha will be his 8th studio album, he boasts billboard number ones, songs with the biggest artist in almost every mainstream genre, and is arguably the most famous Jamaican artist since Bob Marley. Across decades Sean continues to be a shining star and an ambassador of Jamaican culture. The most interesting part being, instead of resting comfortably in his success – Sean seems dead set on continuing to elevate.

While Sean has completed his US leg of the Scorcha tour, with the NOVO being the second to last date, Sean is continuing to push the Scorcha project internationally, with upcoming shows in Canada, the UK, and European Union. Additionally Sean will be joining Pitbull and Iggy Azalea for Pittbulls “Can’t Stop Us Now” Tour in select cities this fall. Click HERE for more information regarding Sean’s upcoming tour dates.
