Using music as her therapy, Simone Kelly has been on the road to healing. After weighing merely 100 pounds and losing herself in an emotionally abusive relationship, Kelly knew that it was time to pick herself up. Not being loved properly put her in an unfamiliar space, from being a light and fun-spirited person to being afraid. And, though she expects to write cheerful records about having the man of her dreams one day, for now, that’s not her reality.
During a time of self-isolation, Kelly was at a crossroads with figuring out what she wanted to do with her life following her reality TV career. With a keen interest in music, she sought advice from her then-boyfriend, a famous music video director. After being laughed at and told to pursue acting instead, it opened Kelly’s eyes to how she was living. The years of helping her uncle, a former rap group member, write and record verses in the studio paid off as she put her pen to paper. Kelly admits, ‘I started writing records about the way I was feeling at that time and it started making me stronger. Then, I started back surrounding myself with people who believed in me and wanted me to win.’
Even when Kelly didn’t have the words to speak up, she used her music to speak out and bring herself out of a situation that she didn’t have the courage to walk away from. A self-proclaimed open-book, she doesn’t hide too many things and is ready to share her truth with her fans. While some may compare Kelly to Tink or Summer Walker, she has been working on a new song “Time,” that will put her in her own lane. With vulnerability-wrapped lyrics, Simone Kelly’s song reflects a woman who is fed up with her partner and wants listeners to know that it’s okay to put yourself first, adding ‘It’s kinda like my final validation of approval.’
