Singer Geneva Lei reclaims the power in a toxic relationship on her latest colorful single “Tell Me”

Singer Geneva Lei just released her latest single “Tell Me” where she gets candid about a toxic situationship over a bouncy beat.

Geneva Lei hails from Mississauga, Ontario, a city just outside Toronto. Her artist name arrives directly from her given name. She originally only used her first name, however during a high school talent show she felt she was ready to use her full name and has been performing under Geneva Lei ever since.

Lei is known for her contemporary R&B sound. “I like to keep the soul but also like to fuse my sound with hiphop and pop accents to it!”

She pulls inspiration from artists such as Kehlani, Jhene Aiko and Jazmine Sullivan.

We asked her about her passion for music and she shared “music is all that I am. I’ve been singing since I was a child, so my whole life has been surrounded around music. I don’t know where I would be or who I would be without it. I can’t imagine myself without it.”

On April 18, Geneva Lei released her brand new single “Tell Me.”

The record is open, honest, relatable and fun. The bouncy production from Mamic and Slim Fo features strong snare shots followed with a groovy melody. Lei skates across the record with icy vocals and an insanely addicting hook. The songwriting is flawless and jumps out at the listener as much as the instrumental. She takes a traditionally sad scenario and remixes it into a fun and vibrant record.

We asked Lei about the process of the song as she shared “With the bouncy instrumental and fun lyrics, I wanted the theme of this song to be about me. How I can be myself and have fun with my girls. I usually write songs about heart breaks that have a sad feeling, but this time I wanted to highlight that getting rid of someone who is no good for you, might be the best thing for you.”

“This song was about of a specific person, where he sold dreams and made me believe that we had a chance of being together. So, I spent months with him, “going with the flow” just to end up having to break off our situationship myself. Knowing your worth in the end is the best thing for yourself.”

Geneva Lei leaves listeners with a message with the single “Leave who doesn’t want you and put in the effort to make you happy! You deserve a gentle and honest love, a love where you don’t have to over extend yourself and they meet you in the middle or wherever you are when you need it.”

Geneva Lei has goals of sharing her music on stages across the world. “I like to do more festivals and be able to go on tour! My dream is to go on tour and see the world because of music. Also, have a headlining show. That would be so much fun for my band and my team.”

She also gave us a preview of what’s coming up for 2023. “I have a few features that will be dropping this year, you’ll hear them soon! Also, I have my EP coming out towards the end of the year. I’m so excited for you to hear them!”

We asked her what song would be the perfect introduction to her and her music she states “I’d want them to hear “Tell Me” first! I think it introduces a listener to a fun side of me, with a catchy hook and fun instrumental. Hopefully it makes them curious to see my range as and discography as an artist!”
