"You are better off here. That’s the biggest message."

Virginia-born, Los Angeles-based artist Stoney (@goodmorningstoney) is making waves with her latest single, “Some Mo,” a high-energy anthem that dropped on Christmas 2024. The track follows her debut single, “Better Off,” released on Halloween, which tackled the heavy themes of childhood struggles and overcoming dark moments. Now, with “Some Mo,” Stoney is embracing life, confidence, and an unstoppable drive.

Born in a car off Battlefield Boulevard in Chesapeake, Virginia, Stoney—real name Halle Stoney—has always had a unique journey. Moreover, her artist name isn’t just a moniker. It’s a reflection of her identity. While her family still calls her Halle, the nickname “Stoney” stuck when friends kept hyping her up with phrases like, “That’s Stoneyyy!” and “That’s the Stoney factor!” Eventually, it felt more like her true self—so she ran with it.

Now based in Los Angeles, Stoney is carving out her place in the music scene with a sound she describes as “cinematic pop.” Thus, pop music with an epic, immersive feel and unconventional production.

The Inspiration Behind the Music

For Stoney, music is survival. During an interview with Remixd Magazine, Stoney shared her background. Growing up feeling like an outsider at an all-white private school, she said she found solace in songwriting and the music of her favorite artists. Rihanna, SZA, Tierra Whack, Doja Cat, and Frank Ocean all shaped her artistry, inspiring her to create music that’s deeply personal yet universally relatable.

Her debut project, “The Stoney Project,” is a testament to that journey. Moreover, transforming from an insecure kid into a confident artist unafraid to own her story. The project dives into her past struggles and triumphs, balancing raw emotion with empowering energy.

“Music and being an artist is part of the reason I survived my childhood depression,” Stoney tells Remixd Magazine. “Having an immersive and emotional experience with some of my favorite records truly saved me from making a decision that could have ended my life. I wrote everything I was going through into words and into song, and leaned on some of my favorite artists when things felt dark and lonely.”

“That’s why a lot of my music talks about my hero’s journey,” she continued. “Going from being an ugly duckling at an all white private school to now a superhero artist that gets to do what she loves for a living full of confidence. Being able to feel music is such a blessing. It inspires me every day to keep going.”

What’s Next?

Stoney is gearing up to drop her next single. This time, she’s exploring love in all its forms. While she hasn’t locked in a release date yet, fans can expect an official announcement in February.

However, through it all, Stoney hopes her music resonates, especially with young Black girls who feel like they don’t belong. “Even if you can’t see it now, you are better off here,” she says, emphasizing the power of resilience and self-love.
