Toronto-based singer Rachelle Show looks to express her freedom on her latest feel-good single “I’m Done“.
She was born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario. Currently, she is based in Toronto.
We asked her about the origins of her artist name.
“My legal and artist name is Rachelle Show. My name was orchestrated by my parents who come from two different backgrounds. My mom always wanted a daughter named Rachel, however, my father liked the idea of giving it a French-Congolese twist by adding the extra L and E. Making the name Rachelle (pronounced Ruh-shell). My last name is Show which comes from my Father Show-Do-Man, who was a 2x Juno award nominee back in the early 2000s. My father legally changed his name to Show, thus creating the ‘Show’ clan. I decided to keep my name as a tribute to my father as I carry on his legacy in the music industry. “
Show’s sound features pop accents with a bit of R&B, and Hip-Hop flavors, bringing forth a nostalgic yet refreshing style. She pulls inspiration from the early 2000’s: Neyo, Demi Lovato, Fefe Dobson, Jackson 5, and more. More recently: Rihanna, Ariana Grande, and Beyonce.
For an introduction to her music, she recommends her debut single “Best Is Yet To Come“.
“I just feel like this song really speaks to who I am as a person, and is a great introduction to my story and sound.”
On May 5th, Rachelle Show debuted her newest single “I’m Done” which serves as an anthem about freedom.
“This song was constructed with the acknowledgment of pain, but the understanding that you will get through this. Our goal was to capture this idea with a fun, vibrant, and energy-clearing vibe. Like every song I write, I wanted to communicate honesty through painting a sonic picture of what an actual grieving process feels like. Despite the obvious nature of the song, I wanted listeners to feel a sense of freedom. The journey to finally saying “I’m done” may be long and hard, but once you arrive, it is revitalizing and liberating.”
The single features a feel-good atmosphere built by JUNO award-winning producer Rich Kidd and Mario Posella‘s instrumental. The production has a West Coast bounce meshed with an early 2000s R&B feel. Show skates across the record with her strong vocal range belting her freedom. With a catchy hook, powerful lyrics, and great energy the song is built for success.
The theme of this release was orchestrated by the time of the year. It’s spring and we are all doing some form of spring cleaning, some may be physical things, others may be relationships in their lives.
“This song was inspired by a particularly pressing issue that many creatives in the arts and entertainment industry face… “Being too busy” as they strive tirelessly to create a reality for themselves where they can live off of their art. It requires laser focus, sleepless nights, and is sometimes a 24/7 job. It can be very difficult for their partners to receive that, much less accept it.”
Drawing from a personal experience, Rachelle wanted to highlight what it feels like to be free from that kind of relationship, and instead be free to let her creativity and work ethic flow.
“I want people to know that this song is a literal result of my blood sweat and tears. Everything about this song is so raw and true to how I was feeling at the moment. I put my all into this song and this release, I just want it to be relatable and I want everyone to feel as free as I feel when I listen to it.”
Rachelle’s passion for music burns immensely, we asked her what inspires it.
“Music is in my soul, it’s what I feel I was sent to this earth to do. No matter how far I stray or try to run from it, something always pulls me back. So I believe I am exactly where I am meant to be. What always inspires me to push harder is my father. He is the reason I have a fire burning inside of me. Because his journey in music and on this earth was cut short I feel like it’s my duty to carry on his legacy and make it my own. I want to heal people through my music, and I want to share this beautiful creative experience with the world, or with anyone who cares to listen. “
The singer is looking towards the brightest lights music has to offer.
“I plan on taking my career to the top and I don’t plan on stopping until I get there. My biggest dream is to do a worldwide stadium tour where I have millions of fans singing my music back to me. I will know I have made it, the day I get to experience that with the people of the world.”
For the rest of 2023, she plans to work on her debut EP which aims to be released by the end of the year.
