Zer is building a global Pop vision between China and Los Angeles

In today’s borderless music industry, artists who can authentically bridge cultures often become the voices that shape the future of sound. For emerging pop visionary Zer, that bridge stretches across continents. From her early beginnings in China to the vibrant creative ecosystem of Los Angeles. Now ten years into her life in the U.S., Zer is crafting a distinctive musical identity that merges Western pop innovation with Chinese musical sensibilities, creating a sound that feels both globally familiar and refreshingly new.

A classical beginning that sparked a modern sound

Zer’s musical journey began remarkably early. At just five years old, she was introduced to classical piano by her mother, studying works by legendary composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven. These early lessons instilled a deep understanding of musical structure, harmony, and emotional storytelling. But Zer’s creative curiosity quickly expanded beyond classical training.

By the time she reached high school, he had formed a rock band and began experimenting with songwriting. At 15 years old, she wrote her first full song. In doing so, she performed it while singing and playing piano simultaneously. That same year, technology opened an entirely new creative pathway.

A YouTube video featuring an Asian creator explaining how Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” was produced sparked a revelation. Suddenly, music was no longer limited to instruments and performance. It was also about production, digital tools, and sonic architecture. Using GarageBand on his iPad, Zer began crafting her own productions, laying the foundation for the multi-dimensional artist she is today.

From SoundCloud experiments to professional singles

At 20 years old, Zer made a bold move by relocating to Los Angeles to fully pursue her music career.

Two years later, in 2018, she transitioned from independent online uploads into the professional music industry. Collaborating with producers in Los Angeles studios allowed her to understand the deeper mechanics of the music business—from songwriting and arrangement to recording and distribution.

Her first official release arrived in August 2019, distributed globally through DistroKid, marking the beginning of her professional catalog.

Like many artists, her plans were temporarily disrupted by the pandemic in 2020. But today, Zer is picking up where she left off. With renewed ambition and a more expansive artistic vision.

A sound inspired by icons across eras

Zer’s musical influences stretch across genres, generations, and continents. From the global pop influence of Lady Gaga, Sia, Adele, and Rihanna, to the groundbreaking Chinese pop legend Jay Chou, Zer developed a deep appreciation for artists who push creative boundaries. More recently, contemporary innovators like Billie Eilish and Doja Cat have shaped her perspective on modern music.

Moreso, Billie Eilish’s minimalist, cinematic sound—often created in collaboration with her brother Finneas—represents a new era of pop that resonates with Gen Z audiences. Zer sees parallels between her atmospheric approach and classical composers like Dmitri Shostakovich, both of whom build emotional tension through intentional sound design. That layered inspiration fuels Zer’s own sonic palette.

A cultural fusion that defines her sound

At the core of Zer’s artistry lies versatility and emotional nuance. Her vocal style can shift from rich, full-bodied tones to delicate, almost ethereal textures reminiscent of choral arrangements. This dynamic range allows her to craft songs that feel both intimate and cinematic. Musically, Zer blends Western pop structure with melodic phrasing influenced by Chinese musical traditions—resulting in a cross-cultural fusion that stands apart in today’s crowded pop landscape. It’s a sonic identity that feels equally at home on global streaming platforms and international stages.

What’s next for the global Pop icon?

Zer’s ambitions extend far beyond individual releases. Wuth that being said, her long-term vision is to help create a global pop phenomenon capable of resonating in both Western and Chinese markets. Two entertainment ecosystems with immense cultural and economic influence.

China’s rapidly expanding concert and entertainment market presents enormous opportunities, yet Zer believes there is still room for the next generation of internationally recognized Chinese pop stars. With her cross-cultural background and modern production approach, she aims to contribute to that evolution.

Zer is currently working on new music with her collaborator and mentor 2LC², also known as Fewtcha, while also producing an upcoming project for artist Lez Wess.

Among the most intriguing developments is a concept project titled 404: Dreams Not Found.

The project emerged from an unexpected setback when unmixed demo files were lost. Rather than abandon the material, Zer and Lez Wess turned the situation into creative inspiration. Using artificial intelligence tools to help reconstruct and reinterpret the music while staying true to the original songwriting.

Inspired by the digital “404 error” message, the project represents resilience, innovation, and the ability to transform loss into artistic evolution. For Zer, that philosophy mirrors her entire journey. Music, after all, isn’t just about what exists, but about what artists are brave enough to create next. Don’t believe it?
