Afro-pop star Wizkid’s anthem “Essence” stays breaking records

Ayo Balogun aka Wizkid is having a summer to remember. Not only is his 19-Leg North American tour sold-out, the Star-boy as he is known in his continent Africa is now dominating American charts courtesy to his “Essence” remix featuring pop star Justin Beiber.Listen to Essence (Remix) below:

When his Made In Lagos album dropped in October 2020, the album peaked at No 80. As of the time of writing this article, the album is currently slated at No 54, making it the highest charting Nigerian on the Billboard 200, surpassing Burna Boy’s feat with the Grammy-winning Twice As Tall that peaked at 58.

The Essence (Remix) is also doing numbers currently shy of a Top 10 spot, dictating the Afro-pop Dancehall star could score his second Top 10 after bagging a number one single featuring on Champagne Papi Drake’s first-ever lead single, “One Dance” back in 2016.

Wizkid’s meteoric rise in the US comes after his song Essence has emerged a mainstream phenomenon in the US, ousting the likes of Doja Cat and Ed Sheeran on Shazam charts, as well as performing well on Hot Hip Hop R&B charts on reputable broadcast outlets such as IHeart Radio and Billboard.
